I had exactly that set (your first RCA set) in my bedroom and used it until July 1992. I watched Johnny Carson's last broadcast on it. What a sad night. I can still remember he said "I big you a heartfelt goodnight" the screen went black and my stomach came up into my throat. My dad had bought the set in approx 1969, and it was on a matching fantastic roll around cart, so this was his first portable colour set. It had remote which still worked of course, and the remote used sound rather than IR signal, and it actually turned the dials on the set as it changed things. By the time I started using the set the colours were pretty muted, but I loved it. A friend brought a tube tester and we found that every tube in the machine was showing up well below "good" although the only flaw in performance was the muted colours. I don't know if replacing all those tubes would have improved the colour or if it was faded because of burned out phosphors. I used it until we moved 1000 miles away and didn't have a set in my room again until college. I was 15 and having my own TV in my bedroom at all was unbelievable, and at that time we still had black and white sets at home so even muted colours of this set were preferable to black and white, like the set in my mothers room which was a 13" sony which probably still works. Our main family set was a beautiful big Magnavox colour console, circa 1975 with direct dial tuning like a phone dial you could enter your channel directly from remote or from the set which had beautiful square white buttons which were touch sensitive. That set died almost the same week we moved out of our big house.

Sure could use one of those seventeener crts for our predicta.

Remember when CRT meant cathode ray tube?

Crt displays work with electrons and a beam that changes the color and a liquid crystal at the crt screen

For re chroming pinstripes on cases, I found a chrome ink pen that does an amazing job, as the ink dries it becomes almost like electroplated chrome.
Not expensive either.

The GE Compact Color @56 mins. I worked on one of those back in the late 70s there was nothing I tried that produced anything but a dull focus pale color image. Series filament and compactrons. It seems they sold a lot of them in spite of their dullness.

I could never figure out how analog tv could be watched by everybody for free like listening to a radio, yet for the broadcasters of analog, they got by with one or two commercials per half hour program and most cities had maybe two or three channels, and today we all pay dearly for cable digital tv with poor choice programs that are like panning for gold to look for good programs to watch, and strings of advertisements to tolerate every two to three minutes, even during the news!

I had one of those Sony sets back in the 80's, best TV I owned. Had it in the shop one time and had it back in a day. I'll be darned if I could remember what the problem was. The owner of the repair shop was also an authorized Sony Repair center. I remember a comment he made saying it was a common failure, wish I could remember the issue.

The radio that you show at the 30 minute mark bears the logo for the National Recovery Act. This program was designed to put people back to work towards t end of the Great Depression and just prior to WWII.
How do rid this gear of all of that caked on dust from centuries of sitting idol? High pressure blow gun outside?

Always enjoy your videos, back in 73 thru 77 I was in my teens and worked at a TV shop in Tappan, NY called Tappan Television. Learned how to troubleshoot electronics from the owner, Harry Kirk who was a WW2 vet. I went on to work for NCR Corp for over 30 years as a Field Engineer & ran break/fix calls on all their products, retail & financial plus 3rd party equipment. Retired now & 65, life’s too short.
