Ive never heard of the river phrase, its always imagine driving down a bump road, i think the river explains it alot better, also ask the engineers to make more leg room even the a330 is to small speacially on long haul.😀

I seem to enjoy turbulence. I ride motorcycle motocross and I am bounced all over the track, but I enjoy it. Turbulence to me feels like I am riding on the track. My father was an engineer for Boeing aircraft and he used to tell me how sturdy airliners are. It takes an awful amount of force to break an airplane.
