Soft tip has less deflection when you apply spin because it grabs the CB and compensates for the inertia of hitting the CB on the side. Hard tip works better for people who usually play with little spin and rely on accuracy and power, soft tips are for players who apply a lot of spin and play more complex and controlled shots.

I know soft is better to manage spin than hard but most pros use a medium hard which is a good in between

I used to have an old soft tip and I could shot a ball at full table length and have it draw back over a table length, never been able to do it with any other cue or tip. Once I lost that cue tip I lost 80% of my cue ball control. :(

It used to be called release ..... difficult to jump with a soft tip because it stays on ball too long ..... also soft tip is no good if playing on outside edges of cue ball as it will have tendency to "squirt" cue ball

With soft tips it's easier to control short distance shots and put controlled spin on it.
With hard tips you shoot longs distance draw shots with less effort.

Ey Brandon, is it safe to assume if im using a soft tip, if i hit the ball slightly off center it will create more sideways spin as opposed to a medium tip?

Some people think that because a soft tip stays in contact with the CB slightly longer, a soft tip can apply more spin. Also, the contact time is still extremely small with both a soft and hard tip: close to a thousandth of a second. Assuming the CB speed is the same in all comparisons, even though the peak force will be different, more with the shorter contact time, the amount of momentum (linear and angular) transferred to the CB will still be the same because the sum of force over contact time is the same in both cases. The CB doesn't move much (translation or spin) during the extremely small contact time, so the only significant factor is the tip contact point at impact.

A hard tip will always produce more english weather it be left, right, top or bottom. Check out the articles by Bob Jewett, there are many. The Jacksonville Project is a good place to start. If you look around enough you might find the slow motion documentation on the cue tip hitting the cue ball studies he did.

So... between soft & hard.. For a power draw shot... does a hard tip do a better job of putting more back spin on the cue ball? Or does the soft tip back spin the cue ball faster then a hard tip?

I have always loved the game of pool but never played with the goal to improve.....until I saw a video of yours. Now I have seen most if not all and the improvements have shown. Be it a bar box or full size it all works. Pool has been my release..my zen if you will. Thanks for making this complex game so very simple.

Its all  BS , he switched cues and quite possibly the shafts were different which has a huge effect , not to mention the inability for the industry has  to create quality specified tips , I am not saying it is easy , but anything made from  leather tips can vary greatly , even man made tips . I would agree a harder tip helps break and jumps ,. but your own personnel pole stroke and  pole shaft may have far more to do with spin , and don't forget the rails there  not even the same , there is just a lot of variables to account for ,

If a softer tip will make it easier to deliver spin, won't a harder tip make your spin tehnique better since it is harder to get a lot of spin on the ball with it?

As a newbie to specifics on pool playing pieces, what is the difference between Soft and SuperSoft tips? I'd like to order some new tips for the pool cue set I just acquired from someone who's had it all through his son's upbringing, where it saw a LOT of use over the years according to him. I like using English on a ball when I can, and have read soft is better for that than hard or medium hard, but tips such as Kamui or kamikaze Black SuperSoft are EXPENSIVE. I don't want to order something that is either marketing hype, or a real bad idea for an amateur player. Thanks!

you can get the same amount of english from a soft tip to  a hard tip.  for years i used elk master tip,  the softest tip on  the market. and the way i put them on made it even softer. i just  got a samsara with a triangle hard ass tip and i get the same  spin and a soft. it doesnt come off the tip any different  like this guy said.

Hey Brandon thanks for all the videos I've been watching allot of them and found them to be very helpful. My skill level for 8 ball Billiards is around beginner-intermediate level and recently I've decided to invest in a cue stick. I've read up on some of the stuff about the different attributes for cue sticks and brands but I was wondering if you had any recommendations. Thanks again and I hope you continue to make more videos. :)

you are right... Soft tips can throw off your line if you're getting adjusted to it but you can always just practice and get used to it. But just picking a soft tip like Kamui, Moori, Sniper or any of those your stroke will need to be very precise. Harder tips make for good accuracy but sometimes not the best english but that's all dependent on the shooters stroke not the tip necessarily.
