So much valuable info, as usual. I see MKE2 "Reduced Sensitivity" versions floating around. 1) what is the appropriate use for this - -can it be used for standard dialogue? 2) as a general concept, why wouldn't you just use a regular sensitivity version and lower the gain, enjoying the increased signal to noise ratio? Did you already do a video about this?

HI CURTIS, great video! i just started to make commercial for a local client, and thinking about upgrading audio equipment (from Rode Videomic pro on a boom pole and recoded in zoom h6). I am mostly solo-shooter. So the option that I thought about was ( a) tentacle track e with sync e or (b) sennheiser mke600 with zoom h6 or (c) rode wireless pro. I dont know in the future how many persons will i record at once. I intend also to do short films. What do you think about this options? and if you would recomande me something else? the buying buget is about 800EUR. Thank you in advance!!!

Great video! Do you notice a lot of handling noise with the countryman b6? I recently tried to use mine in a podcast situation with high end in ear monitors on and couldn't stand the noise that came from any slight movement.

Amazing video, which actually captures the further away? Here I am thinking of street interviews or prank videos where you don't want to hold the mic and hand it over to the people

I'm looking to improve the sound recording quality of my kit. I have the Sony UWP system. I'm trying to find comparisons of stock Sony mics to something like the Sanken, but it's nowhere to be found. How much of a difference will I hear if I replace them with Sanken? Thanks!

Thank you.

As an amateur who will never buy a pro lav mic, I appreciate the intro. These things have to be the most fragile, the most prone to misadventure, and the weakest part of capturing sound.

Can one use the Sanken or something like the Sennheiser ME 2 with the DJI wireless mic? Sorry for the noob question, but I'm not sure how it works with power/compatibility. Thanks for your great videos!!

Hi Curtis. I am upgrading my lavs but will want to connect to a Tentacle E which uses the locking Sennheisser. I am cutting with an 8050 and Schoeps MK41. I have been attracted to the Twinplex, but there seems to be no available termination to match the Tentacle E 3.5 lock. Do you know of a workaround, or could you recommend an alternative?

Hi Curtis,

I am looking for a new subminature lavalier that can easily be hidden under clothing for moving subjects (documentaries).

If you had to choose would you go for the DPA 6060 over the DPA 4060 ?

Thanks !

Many thanks for another excellent review. I am going to get a lavaliere better than the ones I have to use with my iPhone and your review pointed to the solution: Voice Technologies. I've completely forgot about Voice Technologies what was really surprising seeing that I have a VT lavaliere ( an old model with a big battery compartment and XLR end. I can't use it with my iPhone.) and used it many times when I shot wired rather than wireless interviews. But you mentioned a VT mic and 💡! .

Why I didn't think about Voice Technologies before even if I had one? Maybe because I didn't use it since the lockdown and because I was obsessed with DPA, which is the mic I really want but it's beyond my budget at the moment. An option would be the Deity Wav Pro with the Picogear transmitter (the new pro version. You can connect the transmitter to a lavaliere mic). The transmitter is so small that it might fit inside a suit /shirt/coat pocket with the mic cable so no need of 'could you please pass the cable under your shirt?" that so many interviewees feel uncomfortable about and rightly so.

Thanks, Mr. Judd, for your years of helpful videos. I'm in the market for a new professional level lavalier microphone system. Your video is very helpful. If you or one of your viewers/subscribers can point me to one of your videos in which you take time to show the novice/newbie (me!) the most common, effective settings to use when recording educational videos using a wireless lavalier system (with a Blackmagic Pocket Cinema Camera 4K-6K) in an airtight, indoor studio, I would be very appreciative. One of my difficulties in this area is knowing how to use the jargon of this industry to find the resources I need. But, I'll keep looking. Thanks again, Mr. Judd. Jay Creighton

Hi Curtis! If it was a situation where 'hiding the lav mic' wasn't an issue, what would you choose of these three? I'm torn between the DPA 4061, the Shure TwinPlex TL-47 and the Deity LavPro. I think I can scratch out the Sanken because it's a bit too bright for my tastes. But I really like the natural sound of the 4060/4061 but I also know that the Twinplex T47 is one of your favorites. But I also have seen comparisons of the Deity LavPro and it's pretty impressive from what I hear. If hiding the mic wasn't an issue what would you choose between the three? The problem with the DPA 4061 is that it's not easy to test it either since most of them do not offer free returns. But overall what would you choose between the 3? :P

Hey Curtis, As always, great video, very helpful. 1) I'm looking at the Sanken, would it be a good choice while standing in front of an electronic white board? IF not, any recommendations? 2) I'm recording with a Zoom H5 recorder, will the cable connect to the recorder? Will the Zoom H5 cause any problems? Thanks for providing this review.

3 questions

1. if I like the sound that comes out from Shure sm7b, which of these lavalier mics is the closest to that?

2. Also I would like to connect it with DjI wireless mic, which one I can use for that? Or do I need to get a specific connector for this type of use?

3. By using these lavalier mics with a type of wireless mics like the one from DJI, will it decrees the quality of these high end lavalier mics in this video review? if yes, what lavalier mic would you be recommending to pair with DJI?

Thank you very much!

Hi Curtis. I have a question. When recording the audio for a standard outdoor corporate interview (interviewee being interviewed by someone standing just to the side, behind the camera) what do you instinctively use for recording audio. Assuming it's a bit windy but not particularly strong and you can't get much shelter. I assume ideally you would set up a shotgun mic with dead cat boomed overhead, just out of frame, on a well sandbagged c-stand but I'm focussing on if you only have a lav mic. Which of these options would you focus on?
1. Attach the lav mic to the outside of, say, the person's suit, clearly visible (assuming here the client doesn't mind it being visible) and put the relevant furry wind muff on the lav (we have a Bubblebee one for our MKE-2 lav).
2. Attach the lav so it's behind a bit of clothing so it's hidden from the worst of the wind, e.g. just behind the lapel of a suit or behind a tie or scarf (potential issue of rustling)
3. Get the lav properly taped and attached to the interviewee's chest with the required fur etc, to try to reduce rustling.

Curtis, I am looking for either a lav or shotgun mic to shoot my self-tape auditions. This will be in a small 5'x7' non-soundproofed room so I imagine it needs to be a dynamic mic? My budget is not too big maybe 100-200. I have a zoom F4, But would prefer to feed it straight into my DSLR which has a 3.5 mm port. Thank you!!

If that budget is not enough to make a difference versus the built in mic of my Canon RP or even my iPhone 13, then I will just use those.

I was on a major tv production recently and I believe they used a Sennheiser MKH 50, but that is a little too pricy.

Thanks for the video! Can you use Shure twinplex (TL47 & TL48) or Countryman B6 with a macbook for Zoom meetings? I'm currently using the rode lavalier go but it sounds pretty harsh and not as smooth as I would like it to be. I am looking for a lavalier mic that has a sound quality similar to the Shure MV7 or Shure SM7B to use during Zoom calls but so far haven't been able to find one. Could you tell me any recommendations?
