I really like the phrasing of this line. I had to spend a couple seconds before I registered its meaning. The whole song describes one descent into a corrupted, impure state. The past refers to one's older, more virtuous self, but this line seems to say that that self barely even existed; it was merely an ideal that they tried and failed to live up to. I think this fits into the imagery brought up by a distorted dream and a multiplying desire, which imply that good intentions devolved into evil.
