One of my biggest personal flexes is that I’ve never downloaded TikTok. It’s something I’m proud of because I feel that I am a lot more like the people who don’t use TikTok versus people who do

I honestly feel bad for professionals who work in editing advertisements. They go to college for however long so they can learn how to best market to people, only for the 20s to roll around and now companies just sponsor some tiktok teenager in peanuts to do the advertising for them.

The tiktokification of songs and artists like even Frankie Valli is ridiculous. I love him, but now people don’t even think he originally wrote the songs.

They did this to Steve Lacy! His hit song Bad Habit is such a bop though, and I even streamed his entire Gemini Rights album. I wish I could have seen him on tour. They did him so dirty. He’s such a talented and handsome musician!

This is kind of why the only pop-ish artists I listen to are Taylor swift and Melanie Martinez. People with actual meaning and seriousness, not dumb things.

But don't get complicated and bore us

We need to know the words after just one listen so

Repeat stuff, repeat stuff, repeat stuff"...

While some musicians gain the spotlight because of tiktok, for others it may have the opposite effect. People would keep using a song but then not even bother learning about who the artist is, the meaning behind the lyrics, or the techniques they used to create songs. Like imagine you created a 5 minute song with a dark story behind it and then everyone is only listening to 15 seconds of it to create thirst traps.

one song that i found / saw the creation of on tiktok and seriously adore is called “I Shot Cupid” by Stela Cole, the concept of the song is just so fun in general, plus the lyrics and performance are a total vibe

and yes, it has a bridge, and it’s fire

One of the main examples of a 'gimmicky' song, BEFORE tiktok was popular would be Mary On A Cross. It was popular on tiktok JUST because of it's chorus. No body even knows what the verse of the song is or what it sounds like! That was actually the intention of the artist. The song is supposed to be 2 different feels, highlighting the juxtaposition of the two types of feels. One is the catchy chorus, about 'mary on a cross,' and the other is the verse. It is supposed to represent heavenly and hell-ish feelings in the song, as Ghost covers some sensitive religious topics a lot of the time.

Not TikTok related, but this reminds me how everyone only ever knows Call Me Maybe by Carly Rae Jepsen when I bring her up. It reminds me of how if you mention one song from TikTok, that’s all they know. It can be fun to hear but also 🤷🏻‍♀️ I know AJR had a few songs blow up on TikTok, and that wasn’t the intended purpose of them. It’s all weird.

this stupidification, dumbing down of music started far before tiktok. it started with instagram "poetry". rupi kaur did not read any poetry and even bragged about it, she stole "poetry" from other people on instagram. i grew up reading and writing classical, traditional old-timey poetry, and the second i saw how successful rupi kaur's milk and honey had been i knew this was the beginning of the end of greatness

i'm getting somewhere with this. not just ranting. instagram "poetry" set the stage for dumbing the arts down to a younger and younger audience because standards started to erode. not just that but lead-poisoning in the US (not a conspiracy theory) spawned a lot of stupid shit online and people from the US which dominated the internet got dumber. poetry went from a mark of education towards the self and the world with historical and contemporary references to something angsty teens used to vent their feelings bc their parents didnt love them

likewise, tiktok music is so bad because its adapted for a younger, dumber audience. these kids arent going to revolutionize the world with their attention span so shot they cant maintain it beyond 15 seconds. call me a snob but 90% of music and poetry made on these social media apps are mediocre because the people behind them are slaves to social approval and "clout". do some of them like music? perhaps. some even have an affinity for it. but ultimately their goal is to have people look at them and shower them with warmth

The Jackson 5 literally had a song called ABC in 1970. Fergie did London Bridges in the 2000’s. Pop has been about gimmicks for a very long time. Also, a gimmick oriented bop comes across so inauthentic, which is why it’s so resented by actual musicians.

The only two artists who caught my attention by marketing their music did it with a swamp blues cover of Heart Shaped Box and saying that their audience were mentally ill Goth queens. Sold. I'm your demographic, and you didn't do what everyone else is doing, which is appealing.
