If Luffy had already his powers, it would be just like you said. Ace would survive and instead sooner than later, his crew would most likely get killed.

The Ace role would be his crew instead which is more tragic and unbeneficial to Luffy imo.

Ohara's "What if's" storiesare pretty great. Tbh, I was devastated because of Ace's death. I was literally crying while denying the fact that he died but then it was indeed necessary for the character development of Luffy. I think Oda did great in writing One Piece.
