I wish public schools would focus more on the accomplishments and perseverance of people like Woods, despite adversity. Adversity comes in all forms and impacts almost everyone at some point in life. It doesn't help our youth today to teach them they are victims and owed something solely because of race, gender or religion. That only fosters a will of acceptance, resent, defeat, anger and crime. In the end it gets them nowhere and robs them of their dignity, especially when the state gives them an addictive IV drip (a "get by" government program). Tom Sowell articulates this well. So does Morgan Freeman, when he tells Mike Wallace to stop feeding rascism by constantly classifying individuals by their racial status. We also need to stress the GREAT importance of having intact families with involved, productive fathers. Tom Sowell discusses how this was much more prevalent in the 1920's than the 1970's (when welfare programs significantly reversed this trend by giving fathers incentive to abdicate their role to the state).
