My pack is way lighter, 1 tarp 1 hammock 1 blanket, first aid kit with a small suture kit and 1 tourniquet all that fits in a satchel and weighs about 4 pounds

It would be interesting to see what kind of fishing gear people take with them. I love to fish the high lakes and usually do good with salmon eggs and rooster tails.

add a tourniquet and learn how to use them with your first aid kit- Those are true life and limb savers.

Nice ideas but I’m in NC where we have cold 3 season and 4 seasons with thunderstorms every afternoon in summer. I’ll be needing my fleece long Johns and down bag. For a trip with temps 28-55 this weekend. And how about the 2 person Walmart tent if you’re sharing weight or the lan Shan 2?

This is a solid video, wish I had seen this 3 years ago. He spent 30 bucks on a tent that was severely lighter than my Nemo Aurora which came in at more than 200 bucks. Say what you want but this guy definitely did research. For a beginner set up this is pretty great. My first set up I Hauled 52 lbs.

Great concept, but a couple of serious errors. Storm gear,ALLWAYS. First aid kit, poorly thought out. No bear canister. All this cheats on the weight/cost projection. And this promotes ignorant risk. So close

It’s always good to be reminded that we don’t actually need the fancy gear. Buying used is also a great option, a lot of people sell gear when they’ve move on to a different pass time or when they’ve upgraded their gear.

Some helpful recommendations here! I am looking into doing a week long motorcycle tour with camping along the way and it looks like the backpacker crowd has the gear situation and organization really figured out!

I like the basis of your approach. It's not necessary to have ultra gear to have an ultra good time.

In Ontario, even though it can be hotter in the southern parts in July and August than it is in Florida, Ontario is also very large, and the further north the colder it gets. So it is necessary to carry bulkier and warmer gear. Ultralight just does not cut it. When the ground is cold I want a thick insulated sleeping pad. More clothes for layering are also needed to be able to adapt to changes in weather. Therefore, being practical and economical is part of the experience.

BTW, to give readers an idea of the size of Ontario, recently I determined the distance to drive east to west across the province from basically Montreal to Kenora is more or less the same as the distance from Toronto Ontario to Orlando Florida.

I really like the idea of packing your tent at the bottom, because you're right. That's the first thing you want to deploy as you start to setup camp. I don't know how I feel about tent poles on the outside of the pack, because if you slip and damage them (could happen) then it's going to be a rough time with tent setup. Fantastic video! Thanks for sharing.

I carry around a 4 person tent. But my backpack is a massive 100 litre lol.

I practically agree with everything you said, yet my two cents on the issue is about your first aid kit. It needs to be more protected and better organized, rather than just tossing everything in a mere zip-lock bag "to save space". This backfires as it subjects the contents to temperature change causing meds (e.g. Advil) to go bad. It also isn't at all padded to protect the equipment mechanically. I suggest investing in a tactical first aid bag and you could fill it with anything . Small yet roomy and you could organize your stuff better. Very valuable advice, otherwise... thank you.

this is an amazingly practical video - just nuts & bolts based on experience with a simple breakdown w yr thought process.

you've twisted my head w the $30 Ozark (now $20! out of stock not surprisingly...) after field testing a $239 (on sale) REI Flash 2 so now I have my "satisfaction year" to think through if all the bells & whistles (3.3 lbs, 2P w double door, vents) are worth the price & having to baby it! 👶🏼 if the Ozark ever comes back in stock, 20 bucks will be worth just to toy with it!

the real kicker is whether or not to pay a premium for a sleeping pad due to a bad back - this is the weakest link in my build & trying to resolve today!

Update: this is a great pack however I’m 5’9.5” my torso length is 20-21” and it’s a little too big for me ( gap of about an inch above shoulders) if your torso length is 22” or so it should be perfect.

I only disagree with you "not" needing a big knife on your person. It's the one thing that will mitigate a lot of potential fail. With it, you can make fire in any weather (even under pouring rain or snow conditions). Gosh forbid your tent fails, you can build a shelter with it. If your water filter flow down the river, you can build a natural filtration system with it. And, "if" you get approached by a predator in the night, I'd rather have a big knife in my hand than just a can of bear spray because you can't (or shouldn't) spray bear spray "inside" of a tent. :)

I bought my Gerber dime in 2015. It hung on my rearview mirror for 2 years, which bleached it an awesome orange color, then lived on my keyring until about 2021. It then migrated to my wallet/pocket organizer, where it lives to this day. It has gotten me out of more jams than I can count or remember. It's more than a tool now, it's an extension of me.

Why is it for beginners? Are you assuming that more "established" backpackers may not have a hard-on for ultralight and may make the tradeoff between cost and weight? There seems to be an unspoken but very powerful assumption that you're not really a backpacker yet until you've embraced the cult of ultralight and sunk thousands of dollars into "industry standard" ultralight gear.
