The webcam in the studio display is a disgrace. They could have put a really great camera in there, but they didn’t.

Granted, this video is a year old, but, you can save $100 in the education store. Alternatively, the base Studio display with standard glass and tilt stand is available on the Refurb store for $1350. Still expensive, but a bit less so.

The LG now goes for <$1000.00. I have mine for 30 months and no issues.. I agree the case is no match for the Studio but since it sits against a wall I cannot see the back anyway. This $600.00 (or more) savings makes the LG a compelling buy.

So many negative comments… meh who give’s a rat’s. I ran a 23” and 27” display some years ago in my photography studio hooked up to my Mac. Loved it. Now, I have an M3 Max MBP & the new 27” Studio display shipping … Can’t wait. I really don’t care about the $$$’s… If you can’t afford it, buy something else. There’s plenty of alternatives.

I’m not wrong. My first computer was the Mac 128, my current ones are MacBook m series, and in between I had a lot of great years working on era,y Lenovo and then ASUS machines. I knew to abandon Apple’s price gouging the minute they switched to the Intel chip, because I was right: Motorola chip OS9 , Intel Wndows XP and Win7 were master pieces, and Apple’s new Intel OSX was bumbling beta-Windows which I wasn’t gonna pay $1000-1500 more just because it was a Mac housing. Now, I think I’m right to use iPhone, iPad, becayse if one thing: sync. A year ago however I made a terrible mistake by purchasing a MacBook Pro M1. macOS, dear God. Could an OS be any more convoluted, bloated and non-sensical? Well probably yes and I’m sure Apple is working hard right now to achieve just that. In more common language, and given my level of professional experience, I don’t care what anyone thinks: macOS, MacBooks, and the entire Cult of Apple sucks. But I’m in once again now, and although I know that that studio display is an overpriced underperforming dud, I’m probably still going to purchase a refurbished one.

The reason for that is that the rest of the world continues development and sustaining design models by tuning and testing using Wndows machines. The lifespan of a model is 4-6 years. Within that time, subcmponents have because to be switched out, firmware is changed, signal flow is tweeked by you tne consumer aren’t told about that, because no matter what, the device will remain functional with windows machines. With Macs however, things like Monitors go in and out of compatibility because of these things, leaving the hapless consumer suddenly dead n the water, combing the web to ask questions on forums, here on YT etc, all of which is not only a devastating waste of time but never leads to any other solution than ditching the device in question and purchasing something else that happens to be Mac compatable at that moment. I guess i am fortunate in knowing how psychopathic and evil Apple really is before I too go and purchase one of their refurbished overpriced low functioning Studio Displays.

While I’ve been writing this I’ve been listening to this presenter trying to talk himself into believing that it was actually ok for him to purchase a studio display. But I will not diss him for that , because i know how it is, and I too am an Apple Hostage.

It is funny though, this presentation could have been completed to occupy 5 minute’s time, but it’s much longer than that because the presenter knows everything that I do about Apple, and he is doing what I would not do, which is to gain notoriety based on sharp insightfulness and then admit to the world that he had purchased an Apple studio display. That takes courage and raw denial my friend, and I think you have more of both than I do. So I’ll just say it in more colloquial language: “that’s right, I got sucked back in just because I’m writing books and in the Apple ecosystem, every word or sentence I write on my phone, iPad or hideous MacBook Pro immediately appears on all 3 devices and in icloud, greatly reducing the odds that I’ll lose intellectual material. And so now, of my own accord, I’m actually funding human righs abuse and the furthering a mindless cult by purchasing yet another Apple device. There’s no excuse, but I’m doing it.”

When compared to the LG 5K for Mac, currently at $950, the Studio Display is offering quite a bit for $650 more... IF you value an aluminum body, good built in speakers, but mediocre webcam, and mic... and, don't mind coughing up $200 more just or height adjustability. Personally, and ESPECIALLY if you need more than one, the LG is a better purchase. Spend $650 on a good VESA mount, speakers, and webcam.

With no doubt a good monitor. But I have an Apple iMac 27 5k Late 2015 and this is a good all-in-one system which I paid much in 2016. Now the tech (M2 Pro) is what I would prefer. When I want to have this new computer in a MacMini M2 Pro I must buy a new Apple Studio Display which has the same quality I think. Selling the iMac will bring about 800 - 900 (max) Euro. The Apple Studio Display is about 1600 Euro. I whish I had this option in 2016 and had not to give away this good display in the iMac. No way to use the iMac as a Target Display unfortunately.

As someone who LOVES their Apple Studio Display, there are a few things about it I don't like.
1.) The power coord is not removable, which in my opinion is just silly, I mean what if it gets chewed by a pet?
2.) Only 60Hz (this is nit picky, I rarely ever benefit from a higher refresh rate, would just be a nice add since the monitor is nearly 2k)

Things I love
1.) Charges, send audio and video from my Mac (yes I know this is a USB C thing)
2.) Speakers 10/10
3.) Minimal cables
4.) Very simple look (I agree the whole gamer look is not my cup of tea)

I don't really mind that it doesn't have height adjustment, but $400 for that ability is way too much.

Overall I think the Studio Display is an 7-8/10, nothing more nothing less. It's good but it has some flaws which I hope will be addressed and corrected in the next variation.

Thanks for all that great information. I have a question and here’s the background info.

I currently have the M1 iMac but will be going with the Mac Studio with the Studio Display shortly. Currently, I have the old 27” Thunderbolt as a second monitor … used mainly for Text and Web. A typical work flow has FCPX on the iMac and scripts, notes, various files, etc on the Thunderbolt. That old display still makes a decent picture …but … I’m having an issue with the Thunderbolt 2 adapter going into the iMac. It just doesn’t give a solid, dependable connection. I can go days/weeks without a problem but then the Thunderbolt Display will start flashing and any app that is open on it flies over to the iMac. Plus it can also make my RAID external drop offline (I don’t know how or why) and that causes bigger issues. I have to jiggle and reset the adapter a number of times for it to settle down. I’ve tried 4 different adapters and it happens on all of them.

Thanks for sticking with this long story … here’s my question: Once I get the MacStudio and Studio Display, can you suggest a second monitor in the 27-32” range to serve as the second display?

I hate giving up the Thunderbolt Display but that adapter is just not reliable. Any suggestion/advice will be greatly appreciated.

Excellent review! I love Macs and Apple products. Everything about Apple products from the OS to their design is nice and clean and simple. I am currently using an Apple 20 inch display from 2003(not the aluminum one) and it still looks great. It sold for $1299(although I bought it when the aluminum one came out on sale for $800) and is 20 inches with a resolution of 1680 x 1050. Considering the 20 inch Cinema Display was $1299 in 2003 the 27 inch 5K Studio Display for $1599 in 2023 is not a bad price. I'll be picking one up soon.

I think the bottom line is essentially this (my opinion, YMMV): It’s unnecessarily overbuilt, it’s surprisingly under-spec’d, it’s comically (or maybe tragically) expensive, but with all that said, this is not just the display you want to have but the display you need to have. 😮 🙂

As a semi-serious comment, the Studio Display is so good in so many ways that if you need two displays side by side you are probably not going to be happy if one of them is a Studio Display.

I originally ignored the studio and went with a cheaper alternative. Last month I caved in and bought the studio display with height adjust AND nano texture. If you have Mac workflow, it's the best display for most things. As well as creative hobbies on my personal Mac mini (design and video editing) I use a MacBook pro 9-5 for my job, conf calls, excel, slides etc and the built in webcam and insane speaker quality actually makes webinars and video calls so much better.

My only frustration with the height adjustable option, is that the lowest isn't low enough. Could have increased the height range in my opinion.

But yes, the speakers are that good. Holy shit they are that good.

When it comes to Webcams, the good news is that with Ventura, you can use your I-Phone's camera as a continuity camera, you just need to set up your I-Phone and Mac. Glad that Apple has done that, and you use an I-Phone stand, or Belkin has come up with a device to mount it to your MacBook. I do think it is a nice Display. My TV is in front of my desk so I can use the HDMI and connect my MacBook Pro, or Air Play, or Mirror it.

For the hight, you can get a wall mount, or arm mount that gives more flexibility, and you can get a VESA Mount option. I also agree with you, that it looks very nice. Much better than the LG Monitors that were sold on Apple's website. Glad Apple has gotten back to making their own Displays and one at a consumer price range.

Nice review, Greg! A fair one I would add at that.
Guess the question I’m left with (with respect to the high brightness of the monitor and so-called “HDR” monitors lying about high brightness) is - does getting this monitor negate that fact that I can edit HDR content on it? I do a mixed bag of media having some HDR photos/videos and some non HDR photos. The main quality I’m looking for is having some compatibility, in terms of brightness, with my MacBook Pro 16” Saw MKBHD’s review of this monitor and he compared it with his MacBook Pro 16” screen and he said there was no comparison. However.. I’m using a 32” LG HDR monitor that has a brightness of a little over 300. So I’m thinking buying this will at least get me in the ball park!
