I wish that SpaceX would seriously consider some of that design and give up the vertical launch so they could go to a much bigger larger heavier spacecraft and do asteroid mining with it

Funny, this tech is not new. Gasonics did this thirty years back to create a wafer plasma stripper basically generating atomic oxygen to strip process masks off silicon wafers. So, let's blow lots of air thru it and call it an innovation. Gasonics used aluminium oxide parts to get around the temp erosion issues.

i too can make a "plasma jet engine". i cut a grape in half and stick it in the microwave.


you actually have to propel the plasma to get meaningful thrust and if you're just using the expansion then yea you have to create a thermal cycle compressing heating then directing the expansion to do work. and all that would still be to drive a fan like turbofan engines do as thats where you get your most efficient thrust, but if you're using electric power to create and heat plasma then just run an electric motor instead. what this guys did is meaningless, but if you're looking to use microwave power for thrust there is the idea to direct a microwave beam at a craft to either convert it to electricity or have it directly heat propellant. but no ones considering using that for commercial aviation as firing microwave beams powerful enough to vaporize someone everywhere is ridiculously dangerous.

If I recall correctly, lithium-air batteries can theoretically achieve energy densities close to jet fuel. If that ends up working it might be a good source of power for this, if this is actual functional technology.

All airplanes have a unit at the back called the Auxiliary Power Unit which is designed to generate electricity. If the issue is power, why not have an airplane's Auxiliary Power Unit running at full power and generate electricity to power these plasma engines in flight?

Actually the technology is out there you can use a sentence you can use the same technology from fusion power generator with a magnetic field inside the engine
