The northern point of the lower peninsula is the city, Mackinaw, past that is the island, Mackinac. Both are pronounced the same despite the different spelling. The are pronounced as "Mack i naw" The "c" at the end of the islands name is silent. From the Mackinac Island tourism bureau "The name Mackinac has been influenced by Native Americans, the British, and the French. The French built Fort Michilimackinac in 1715 in present-day Mackinaw City. The British took control of the fort in 1761 and moved it to Mackinac Island in 1780. The British changed the spelling of the city to reflect the way the name is pronounced, with a "w"."
