The F5 is not only A fine aircraft but it is a beautiful aircraft. if you think of the term jet fighter this fits all the visual criteria. there is something about those gun ports that just says “I mean business“. I’d be curious to see what it would look like if the guy who did the redesign on the F 18 turning it into the super hornet did the same thing with the F5 I mean the F 20 was officially almost identical I wonder how it would look with angled tail booms like on the F 18 to me there is a lot they can still do to this plane modification wise, and to be honest our military needs to get off of this several hundred million dollar apiece aircraft crap pump out a bunch of easy to fly easy to maintain easy to produce aircraft the big 29 is a prime example it is an attractive and very competent Jet fighter

Cor, I wish I was in the US air force during the Cold War: I could have a 20 year career and fly like 5 different jets with the fighter arms race

A very good fighter jets that are very affordable and very practical. My personal opinions are why not create a modified version of this with this upgrades;
Use a little bit bigger engines but still remains it a twin engine.
Upgrade it's radar, where it can detect and attack enemy at beyond visual range.
Upgrade it targeting system, like it uses the common upgrade in F16 that it's missiles follows the target with just looking at the enemies plane.
If this will be done by the Northrop Grumman, maybe this plane will become the most purchase by most countries that do not need of so much bigger budget in defense.

The cost of producing a single use disposable-autonomous version should be about the same as a harpoon-missile or cheaper. A long-range BVR missile is expensive. An even longer range fighter plus missile is very expensive. A supercruise version to deliver 6x500lb at 1500-miles can be cheap if mass produced. Wings are small enough for low-drag. Consider the bloodhound missile and the f5e-tiger2. Why not just use the damn runway and save money on the boosters(launch).?

It would be cool to turn one of these agile, low cost fighters into a dedicated anti drone fighter.

It's basically a TIE Fighter. Simple, nimble and deadly in the right hands. I live by NAS Fallon. Those guys are the real deal. Though, mostly they use vipers now for aggressors.

I did the wind tunnel work from 1979 till it ended. I know that I’m biased about it but it was a great fighter that will only get better with time

Total bull crap. The F5 program was a failure. Only Canada has used it as main fighter jet. The Vietnam squadron was just an excuse to dumb the useless jet.

I remember at the time that this fighter had one of the highest combat readiness rates and could go from a cold start to in the air time much faster than most other fighters of the time. I felt we should have bought more of these ourselves. Something to be said for mass quantities, lower cost, weapons systems. Plus add the fact that this was effective (unlike other nation’s “cheap” massed platforms…

The KAI FA-50 is a modern day example of the F-5, but it has one engine and has top speed of 1150 mph.

Quickly becoming my favorite fighter. I’m a little disappointed the F-20 never really took off and saw wide use.

Still a great fighter, now there is a F-5AT, from Tactical air corp. Bet Ukraine could use these.

The million-dollar question is, why wasn't the F5 used more extensively in the Vietnam War?. why didn't they use the f5's for Mig CAP as it seems they would have been more effective as escorts and Patrol Fighters instead of trying to use these stubby Wing darts as bombers.
