Valve just FIXED the Steam Deck's BIGGEST PROBLEM!

its easier to verify on constant hardware aka deck... that is why they did not do it for the 3m different combinations of pcs.

Steam and PC will always be the absolute worst way to game.

I kind of wish there was a category for barely playable games. So games that are technically working but might require complicated workarounds.

I take a bit of issue with the statement that Vulkan is better in every way.
Outside of a few edge cases Vulkan and DX12 basically provide the same level of access. Vulkan is available on Windows as well but the overwhelming number of engines and games still focus on DX12. There are a few reasons for it.
The DX12 has a more ergonomic API. Vulkan in pure C which can be quite off-putting.
DX12 also get's some features earlier Vulkan or Vulkan only receives them as vendor specific extensions. DirectX drivers can also be a bit more stable and many debugging tools have better support for DirectX.
So even when you ignore reasons like support by Microsoft, existing code bases and familiarity by developers DX12 looks very compelling.
Vulkan's killer feature really is cross platform compatibility.

Valve doesnt care with customers interests! Beware that you will deal with bad waranty system and low support by valve.

Not a Big Screen fan at all, but I love the idea of an alternate OS for Steam.. so if a little gamepad console will help me play ALL my Steam games on a PC running SteamOS where I can also run Discord, browser, etc.. then I'm good with that. I don't want to learn a hobby "running an OS" just to do that also.

I think Valve should ask games with a green checkmark for a smaller cut. That will give developers an incentive to add support. Developers have always ignored Linux

First person games without mouse+keyboard = not playable
You shouldn't be too enthusiastic about the 'consolization' of PC games!
In the end this could come at a high premium - the loss of all the classical typical PC games, which just aren't fun with a game controller!
All the builder games, first person shooters, strategic games and such .. yeah, there are masochist still trying to do so. But we a know that playing such games with analog sticks is god awful!

They didn't say they were going to rank everything, they are starting by most played titles and working down. They don't need to rank everything, I have a title that's been out a year and made less than $100 in revenue with low play times it never needs to be ranked. I'm pretty sure it's playable and I'll test it once I have a deck because I'm curious but it doesn't need a ranking.

If they rank and keep ranked the top 5% of playtime titles that'll be plenty.

There is a process devs can use to request a ranking (including before launch) but I expect many titles will never get ranked.

yellow should be like. you need to modify quite some stuff. but o well.
also keyboard is built in. so for games like tf2 all its required is to chat right? and maybe use keyboard to mannually type in a server ip or name.

Literally people still don’t seem to understand that we will buy a portable system that goes above 60fps, if they offered a beefy-er version at a higher price point, we would hands down buy it with no issue, it’s what we’ve been begging for from switch and other portables, might as well play games on my phone or computer.

So if it works with the steam deck from a software perspective, but has crap or no controller support, it will get a yellow exclamation point, right?
I plan to use mine more as a docked mini pc most of the the time. It would be great if the screen could work as a second screen while gaming. For looking at guides, or for game integration.

I'd rather they fix SteamVR on Linux with mid range AMD hardware. I have an Oculus DK2, 16gb ram, a 3.2ghz 64 bit processor, and a decent graphics card. SteamVR instantly crashes due to a segmentation fault.

If it were possible to just compile SteamVR itself, this probably wouldn't happen.

Truth! Everything you said is exactly my point of view as well. I totally agree. It is just up to Steam to release the Deck so we can experience it our selves and see if it holds to the promises that are made. I have a good feeling about this console tho. I really believe it will be a massive step in the right direction for future handheld devices. If it becomes a success, if it proves to be what people want. Then we will probably see a lot more cool handhelds in the future! I seriously hope so atleast.

Please answer me this, will Destiny 2 be compatible on the Deck based on what we know?
My PC broke, and now it can't run games without the frame rate dropping down to 5, and the monitor broke soon after that. The PC can hook up to other monitors for work and stuff, but it can't ever run games again, so I wanted to get the upcoming SteamDeck to take the computer's gaming place, and before the Witch Queen launches for Destiny 2 in February, but now I need to know if Destiny 2'll be compatible with Steam deck first.

P.S: Please answer, I've spent most of my time on Destiny, and I'd be sad to jump into the Deck and see Destiny 2 is not compatible.

I find it a lil bit misleading to compare this rating to protondb, since it includes steamdeck specific hardware limits and so on. Not at all the same and dont make each other obsolete or so

Needing to use a mouse or keyboard in game that a controller cant access is usually labeled as "Partial Controller support", so the majority of games already have this type of labeling, which may have been previously mentioned.

This would been awesome to have for PC too, instead of constantly checking in protondb to see if someone got it working in Linux.

I don't get what you're so happy about. What's obviously going on here is they're listing the most minor "issues" under "playable" so that the audience thinks that "playable" is almost as good as "verified". That's the reason they're mentioning entering nicknames and using launchers - because these could barely even be called issues, when you have a touch screen and a virtual keyboard. This is obviously a marketing ploy. The reality is that most games that don't have "Platinum" on ProtonDB require more tinkering than this. Sometimes you'd need to enter a command in the launch settings, sometimes launch protontricks, other times you might need to hex-edit the exe file.
Look, Steam Deck is probably my dream gaming platform. I've always loved handhelds, and been wanting to buy a handheld gaming PC for the last two years or so (since I found out they exist). So I'm incredibly hyped for Steam Deck. But please, let's apply more critical thinking here. This circlejerk attitude is exactly what leads to newcomers being disappointed in Linux. Because the Linux community is willing to praise every new little thing.

You sound a bit arrogant assuming they did this because you suggested it. I can assume and guess many has told them the same thing if they didnt think of it first already.

The other side of the coin with launchers is it's convenient for people who are big into making or enjoying mods in a lot of cases. Even having the ability for the user to get third party launchers like vortex from Nexus and so on and so forth would greatly increase user freedom from my perspective. That is a question I'm curious about when it comes to the steam deck and how launchers may work when my it comes to the OS.

You already noted this up front, but without question, the scrutiny these games will get for not being green-checkmarked, and the no-nonsense criteria for receiving said checkmark, are the biggest deal here. Companies understand this is effectively a whole new player alongside Xbox / Playstation, and arguably bridges the gamer gap between core systems and the Switch, and those companies are being heavily incentivized to make their Steam releases more Deck- (and therefore controller-) friendly. They are smart enough to realize, especially with the Steam store deliberately sequestering non-green-checkmarked games by default, that some simple gameplay tweaks can lead to easy money. Especially for older games.

This will only work if the information is accurate and has enough details. If a game is labelled as Playable then I need to know what I need to do to make it playable. For example I just downloaded a steam game onto my Mac that was labelled as unplayable but it still worked.
