So simple, yet useful

For better results generate a white image with the same size as the video resolution. Instead of plain white use about 30-40% opacity, that makes it a lot softer. Important: when importing the image file into kdenlive make sure to check "Transparent Background" in the clip settings. If you are really crazy you can make the white image 80% opacity at the borders and go down to about 20% in the middle.
