They/them is used by Geoffrey Motherfucking Chaucer. So it's already part of the language. That whole "breaks plurals" crap pisses me off. And I'm with Robert -- I don't think the neologistic pronouns make a lot of sense but if someone asks me to do it then I'll do it for the same reason I'd call someone "Bubba" if that's the nickname they wanted to be called.

I think the whole "you have to get your own house in order before you can help others" thing illustrates just how much he can fall victim to confirmation bias. I mean, I somehow doubt he's unfamiliar with AA, and the 12 step program of recovery -of which, helping others is a core component (f.y.i. the 12 steps can be categorized into (1) Trust God, (2) Clean House, (3) Help Others).

First time listener here. I am rather disappointed especially after the amount of recommendations I've seen for this podcast. I expected this to be much more objective and unbiased. I am currently halfway through this video and the second host is really making it hard to finish. He does not seem to add much to the content. He just parrots back what the main guy says and is eager to laugh at the subject. I'm sure this is entertaining for those who hate Jordan Peterson, but it's a bad way to persuade any of Peterson's followers...

JP has this weird cultish effect on people where, if you say that you're not really a fan of the guy, his followers will explain to you how, yes, actually you are but you just don't realize it.

I work with that population. The threshold for our services is below 75. Finding tasks they can do takes more manpower than just doing or automating the task. I don't mind doing that to give them the self confidence they need to thrive, obviously, but if we're doing it toward the end of finding them paying jobs it is a waste of time. I think it's just America's obsession with work playing out in policy that's not fit for any purpose but satisfying the emotions of the old men who sign laws. Every volunteering opportunity I've assisted with have been productivity theatre.

I work with adults so there's probably some survivor bias; we've got the folks who are still relying on these programs into their 60s. But I just see so much toxic optimism around this topic and I spend a good chunk of my work day documenting that, for example, the folks who are entirely paralyzed due to progressed muscular dystrophy are still unable to work. I wish we could focus more on enrichment and life skills that don't just exist to tick a box that says we're trying to find them employment. One client in particular would really benefit from learning how to use a tablet but that's not a wholesome/job focused enough goal for medicaid.

I should note that you're talking about them contributing and having friends and hobbies, as if that's reliant on employment. You point out that its not later, but I guess I'm just frustrated that the thought lead y'all there so easily.

idk. it's a tangent, not super important to the episode but I thought I'd say something.

Jordan's book helped me get my life back on track. I got sober and lost 120 pounds. I gained the confidence to come out gay and learn to love myself. This whole thing completely takes things he's said out of context and is overly critical. I'm disappointed in the spiteful biases in this episode

Evans and Johnston miss the point with regard with regard to the gettjng the room in order. The point is that your sense of responsibilty towards the outside the world grows with that towards yourself. It is not about emergency. If you are trying to fix the world while neglecting yourself then there is something wrong. Its really quite simple.

Pity Evans hasnt done one on Marx ( or I haven't found it).
He was a disgusting parasitic antisemite.

I just don’t understand how Peterson’s “teachings” can be helpful to anyone. One of the best things you can be is resilient, put Peterson says that change is bad and you should fight tirelessly against it and reject all notion that society can be better than any form it’s taken in the past.

My first time checking this podcast out. Man I really wanted to get through this because he's deserving of an episode and I align with your sentiments about him, but you guys just slog on through long and insufferably boring tangents that don't need explaining or to be covered in the least if you're a listener with half a brain cell but you guys still somehow inexplicably think you're talking about interesting stuff. It's weird how often you both laugh at each other but haven't actually said anything funny or entertaining. Feels like I waited forever through you guys just liking the sound of your voices and it took too long to get interesting. Welp, this podcast is definitely not for me.

A correction: Mircea Eliade (pronounced Meer-cha Eh-lee-ah-deh) was a man. He is popular for his books about religions, and his novel Maitreyi (Bengal Nights) which involves a relationship between himself and an Indian woman Maitreyi Devi.

There are enough people for everyone to have a partner BUT incels don’t want just any old woman to be their spouse. They want a young, very attractive woman who wants to submit to their every whim.
If these boys only wanted companionship, it’s out there.
I think that we all grow old and unattractive over time, so if you can’t love someone who isn’t top tier good looks, you’re never gonna be happy for very long.

I was once a somewhat toxic young man due to my lack of social acumen. Luckily I grew up enough and improved myself enough to land myself in a relationship and thank god I never got sucked into the type of violent misogyny that is so pervasive today. I knew people who probably did though

I started reading by age three. It’s called hyperlexia and is often a sign of autism.
If JBP is telling us the truth, then he might be on the spectrum. That would explain A LOT about his rigid views on everything.

And he never read a word of Orwell past the dust cover blurb.

Just a quick note. Hitler was influenced by the philosophy of "social Darwinism", a very different thing than Darwinian evolutionary theory. Hitler actually hated the idea of evolution and the Nazis suppressed its teaching.

Reality is the basis of morality. Myths are a distraction. The only way you could actually believe that myths were the basis for morality is if you believed that morality must come outside yourself. It does not. Obviously. It comes from within each individual. I find no substantive difference between Fundamentalists' "Divine Command Theory" and Peterson's heady bullshit.

Some (more less) correct pronunciations with syllable divisions:
Mircea Eliade -> mir-CHE_-a_ el-YA_-de_ (I underscore after vowels that are not silent)
Carl Jung -> karl yoong (oo as in Moon, good)
Aleksandr Solzhenityn -> a_-le_-KSANDR sow-zhe_-NI-tsyn (zh as in miraGE)

I lost a friend because he got sucked into this weird cult. He couldn't stop talking about Peterson, and the moment he learned that I didn't like the guy, he made it his mission to get confrontational with me any time he could, demanding that "debate" him. I finally did, and my former friend was wholly unprepared for someone actually having sources. So he called me a homophobic slur and blocked me from discord. It's probably one of my proudest moments, but damn I wish this creep wouldn't have had that effect on people.

JBP's unquestioning statement that "disorder has always been represented as feminine!" (By whom?) "That's just the way it is! You can't change it or we wouldn't be human anymore" ironically sounds like the overly sure religious statements he rejected as a teen in confirmation class. So... question everything...unless he agrees with it?
