‘The Red Sea coast of Saudi Arabia is both rich in history and relatively untouched - making it a fascinating place to search for stories. When we met Salem, Master of the Fish Auction in Umluj we knew immediately that he was a great character - with his deep knowledge and charisma. We shot the film over a couple of intense days, and Salem and his family were incredibly accommodating. The backbone of the film was Salem’s story about fishing, sailing and boat racing (he’s a local champion!), but parallel to this we wanted to capture the unique charm of the area, from the landscape to the textures of an Arabic port town. The best bit though was visiting the family farm and having tea and dates surrounded by their flock of tropical birds… and one rather tempestuous ostrich.’ - Tom Cottey, Director
