The detail I find fascinating was cut from this clip - right at the beginning, as Gandalf & co. walk into the room, Grima whispers into Theoden's ear that Gandalf's there.

The implication being that Saruman would hear those words, drop whatever he was doing at the time and join the call, which becomes apparent as Gandalf unleashes his white power.

Chucky's lesser villain role, Grima Wormtongue, second to Josiah Reed.

This sums quite well what Peter Jackson understands for "subtlety". In the book the scene is much more powerful. Here we have an "exorcism" with a bar fight on the background.

Looking back at these movies, they really were horrifically overdone. Read the books or listen to the 1980 BBC Radio series; infinitely superior.

so what would have happened here if Saruman did kill Theoden... in the eyes of the men present here, Gandalf would have killed their king unjustly... not only would Rohan not be on the fellowship's side - I doubt they would even have gotten out of it alive.

I like the part where lifting the spell gives him a nice shave and haircut

I thought the final chapter was an absolutely perfect and powerful ending to the saga.

I found this scene to be a pathetic example of peter Jackson's addiction to crude, gross-out overplay. Tolkien had it far more realistic and subtle. Theoden here looked like Father Jack in the comedy show Father Ted and not a noble aged King under a constant drip feed of demoralising bad advice

In the book all Gandalf did was take Theodin on his porch and he was ok.

The way he smiles is just like my father at me when I was homeless

There is so much darkness and poison in Greema that mere presence of Gandalf puts him in pain.

This is not in the book.
They edited out parts of the books for time. I understand that.
But then they inserted things that were no part of the book. That is unacceptable.
If they wanted to write their own story, they shouldn't have stolen Tolkien's work.
