Correction - engine is a 1.6 turbo! Not a 1.4. My brain defaulted to "tiny engine with a turbo." Appreciate all who pointed it out!

I would stay away from any Hyundai product like the plague.. In my experience the only thing worse than the reliability of Hyundai is the way Hyundai treats their customers. I own a 2017 Hyundai Sonata PHEV, which experienced hybrid system failure on i95 (nearly causing an accident) on Aug 31, 2021. Two months later, during which time the Hyundai dealer made two unsuccessful repair attempts, I picked up my car only to have Hybrid system failure occur for the third time before I even made it to the first traffic light. The service center then told me the car (under warranty) needs a new battery pack, which I have been waiting for over the past FIVE months. The car has been out of service for SEVEN months and Hyundai has refused all buyback attempts. I bought a new Rav4 Prime in Feb…..If I ever get my Hyundai back it will be sold.

A bit of a "fan boy" review of Hyundai about how "keep improving, refining.. " (ad nauseum) " . Sure you're not on the payroll? LOL Like the overview of the features esp the driver assist, so that was helpful. The driving on interstate with your choice of music going I could have done w/o TBH. Would have been nice to get more info on mechanicals (is sport mode a shock adjustment system? Standard coil spring / strut? is it the same AWD system they licensed a few years back? Luggage area? Roof rack and options for loading camping racks/boat racks/gear? Trailer towing? spare tire included? I had to stop at the music/highway part sorry.

Nice Speedmaster and nice review. As someone who has been a loyal Subaru Outback owner for the last six years(Two Outbacks), I am unhappy with the reliability of the CVT and seriously considering the SANTA FE Hybrid as a next vehicle.

Just bought a 2022 hyundai santa fe limited hybrid. Seriously best car ever. We test drove and researched over 10+ cars. Hyundai is in a league of its own. Plus a 10 year 100,000 mile warranty to throw in the mix.

Topher, thanks for another great test drive.

Hyundai, please make those front 1/4 windows able to open and close. Imagine how many e-gallons (or whatever) an owner might save if they could just have those open, and the compressor off. Front 1/4 ventilation is a product of design that many people liked for a long time.

The electric motor filling in until the turbo spools up is brilliant engineering. However, having an electric motor kinda makes having a turbo pointless in this application.

I'd rather have a smaller N/A engine with a stronger electric motor instead of a turbo for better engine longevity & reliability but, kudos to whomever at Hyundai implemented that function into this powertrain.

One thing I really wish Hyundai would STOP doing is bumper level rear turn signals. This new Santa Fe and the new Tucson has them. IMO, those type of turn signals should be banned in the U.S.

I can't wait to see how their plug-in hybrids perform. I hope Toyota is planning to refine their hybrids with this type of value coming from Hyundai.

The reviewer notes that the Hyundai Santa Fe HEV doesn't "quite get the mpg" of its rivals. While true, no one ever mentions the reason for this The reason the Toyotas consistently exceed in mpg is because their hybrid engines are all mated to CVT transmissions ... everything from the Prius, through the Highlander. The Sante Fe HEV mates its 1.6T to a conventional six-speed automatic transmission. That six speed is THE reason why the Santa Fe produces all that wonderful, smooth torque, while a similarly-powered Toyota (e.g. the RAV4 or Venza) give you that under-powered acceleration sound of a baby wanting its bottle. The trade offs: Hyundai - lower mpg but much better quiet acceleration and torque; a conventional, smooth feeling of automatic shifting. Toyota - Better mpg, but more sluggish "moaning" acceleration; less torque; comparatively lower-maintenance CVT (Note: Hyundai has never had notable problems with its conventional transmissions).
