ОтветитьI was skeptical about charging the EV, I drove many of them. However, I decided to go for a Tesla next year, because it is enough for my daily needs <300 km, and after 300 km I fly. Flying saves me a ton of time and stress and I get rental where I fly. This way I can have easy seamless crazy ass acceleration and when I need longer trips I book a flight.

However if I go get a Toyota Prius which takes 12 gallons, at $4 per gallon it’s now $50 to fill up. However you get about 600 miles of range

you’re basically spending the same. Yes I save on each full charge up but I charge FULLY twice a day to get through all my Uber trips and side gigs. I’m spending about $40-$60 a day in charging but I was spending this in gas.
The Tesla isn’t even saving money. You’re just spending on electricity whatever you spent on gas + having to drive around and look for a charging station
You forgot to mention that your panel probably doesn’t have enough room for the required 60 amp breaker, upgrading a 200 amp panel is around $3k

I need a Model 3. I drive to multiple job sites, meetings, picking up checks, pulling out permits, quoting new jobs, dropping off/picking up my son. I do this daily on my big F-250 Diesel truck.

ОтветитьDrove a Tesla for awhile. Ok car, fast but not. But the crappy highway miles made me charge after 2 trips and a small amount of running around. The kinda Broken EccoSport I have would last a week doing that on a tank of gas. Charging does not take super long, but the pain is going to the dam place. 20-30 to nearest charging station, if it is not full. Charging at home is only viable via 40amp plug (1 Grand anyone, that is "friend prices"). And a minor problem can brick your car (until resolved). I can fix my car with a cheap tool kit. (I can do a good amount of repair work). NEVER get in a accident. Oh and the Biggie.
Tesla can brick your car or turn off Supercharging when ever they want to your car, for whatever reason. (FUCK THAAT)
I do on average to 30 miles+ a day. Most of it highway. In 110 degree heat. AC always on (Telsa it is a MUST with that ugly bubble window.) Batteries went fast due to the heat. I would charge some times twice a day(had done 3 twice) Souless car too (I don't know what it is but I felt I was droving a coffee maker, not a car). And I love, long, drop of the hat, road trips, to places I never been too. I can just drive down a road and I will find a gas station. I like the feeling.
Can't say that with a Tesla.
I can see for some it would work well for them. And if it works well for you, that is great. But if I ever really want to jump in a car and drive around my state, Nevada, without worry. I will drive my Accord(love that car, 42 mpg). Almost 560 miles on a tank.
Good point about the model 3. Entry ramps are always fun. It is fast under 100 on a short track. The side cameras. Maintained, it should be fine, heard of owners going well over 200k and only doing brake pads and a EV check. And speaking of brake pads, they will last a very long time compared with normal ones. Those sweet Continental GT tires.(Worth it and I plan on putting them on my Accord. DO NOT get a cheaper tire. You need that grip with the amount of torque and weight (car is HEAVY, Trucks are lighter)
Your total coat.of charging.. is NOT indicitive for the average person.. nit even close for a rural person.

ОтветитьDo you park your electric car in your garage at home ? Have you checked home owners policy for electric fires related to external wiring coverage and fires that destroy residential property? Do you fear a gas tax coming for ev since they don't pay a gas tax currently to sustain roads ? So you saved 10k over 75k miles , whats the inconvenience worth ? Who will repair your car when that time arises ?

ОтветитьYou don't mention the fact the fossil fuels needed to built the cars, the curving up mountains and deforestation to mine the minerals to make the batteries! It takes up to 60k miles to pay back all that fossil fuels to make the car. I could go on, but I think you get the point.

ОтветитьI am ever amazed at folks that talk about “free” stuff & how rebates make things less expensive. Neither is the truth; electricity isn’t “free” even if it is free to you. It costs money to produce & someone is paying for it. Many, perhaps most, rebates arise from subsidies, again with you receiving the benefit & someone else bearing the cost. Realistically, what you call “free” or a lessened expense by rebate is a transfer payment, something to your benefit, the price of which is borne by someone else. But do enjoy your financial windfall.
ОтветитьWhen we owned a house, it cost $250 to have a 240 v outlet installed in our garage. The bill included a whole house lightning surge arrester, just to be on the safe side (Florida). When we moved to a condo, it cost $10,000 to get a 208 volt, 50 A outlet installed at our parking spaces, pre-construction. The developer didn’t connect us to a dedicated meter so charging is free. But our 2 Teslas only require about $30 per month so it will take us about 30 years to break even. The convenience is worth it.

ОтветитьBut your base Tesla 3 is over $10k more than say a base Toyota Camry. That $10k can buy a lot of gas and based on the Combined MPG and annual mileage would provide over 7 years of free driving. Yet you had to pay to chatge the EV.

ОтветитьI’ve owned a Tesla model 3 for almost 5 years. I love the car, but forget about saving money versus gas in my area. Massachusetts electric rates are about 39 cents per kWh, versus your claimed off peak rates of 7-9cents in Kentucky. I haven’t referred anyone, so I have no free miles. I also live in a colder climate where battery efficiency drops by roughly 30% during much of the winter. I charge at home with a 110 outlet, which works great for me,so I had no electric installation costs. On trips where I use superchargers, when I calculate actual miles driven versus and Tesla charging fees versus average gasoline costs for a midsize care, I find that I am often paying more at Tesla superchargers than a comparable price at the gas station. I’m often paying 9 cents per theoretical mile, which translates to $2.70/gallon for a mid size car getting 30 mpg. But in reality, if you drive 5-7 mph over the speed limit, as most drivers do, your range, even in the warm months is reduced. So in reality, I’m paying 10-11 cents per mile.. During the cold part of winter, I’m paying closer to 13-14 cents per mile. That no bargain at $4.20/gallon equivalent. On the cost saving side….the car requires virtually zero maintenance! No oil changes, brakes, tuneups etc. My take…love the car, but don’t expect to s a a penny versus gas.
