Great video! I've found a happy medium. The excitement and atmosphere (and a little bit of ego) have always had me starting 2-3 minutes a mile faster than planned, and skipping planned walk intervals, for 2-3 miles. I've finally settled on a strategy where I give myself permission to be a moron for the first mile, then settle into my planned pace. It's not a perfect plan, but it allows me to enjoy the moment, while limiting the race wrecking damage, and without beating myself up mentally.

I have a problem with being to conservative. I ran my first ultra last Aug. I stayed at a comfortable pace for 3/4 of the race and pushed at the end. When I finished I felt like I had a lot left in the tank. It was a 60k.

I am still trying to find a balance. I guess it is good to stay conservative and finish instead of burning out early and possibly not finishing.

Solid advice! I've only started getting this through my thick head to practice it in training. Coming back from achilles injury, did a half last month and applied a lot of what you're putting forth and it's absolutely a game changer.

I like to project out and say to myself, "if you still feel this good at X point in the race, you can speed up." (knowing full well there's NO WAY I'm going to feel that good later in the race forces my mind to contemplate how I'll be feeling later in the race based on what I'm doing now.
