Bear in mind at this point, Tories and Thatcherism had decimated UK industrialism. Unemployment was rampant and class divisions widened. Edinburgh was filled with decrepit council houses and flooded with Heroin. Mark Renton's state of mind and worldview was created in this environment, so yeah, he's not very enthusiastic about being Scottish.

It's hard to judge what's playing in the Scottish soul. However this scene is so 1000% Polish what we were feeling in 80's 90's in the previous century. The only change is to replace English with German/Soviet and Renton would express all the grief, frustration of Polish soul that time. So miserable. That vodka he's drinking & anger fit so well.

Which culture is "decent"?

Spain?

Mongolia?

Pakistan?

Maybe, Tunisia... Iceland...Arab Muslims?
