I was an artificer in a high-level campaign when we got a year of downtime.

The party had a few more toys by the end of that year. 😁

You do realize that someone with mageslayer can mark a caster and just beat his ass every time he casts something and then whoop his ass as he tries to flee

Our Curse of Strahd DM shared this with us and said we can use all apart from crafting (which makes sense). Our barbarian had to use Healing Surge during this week's session. We've had a lot of combats with no chance of a rest and only the ranger and artificer (one spell slot left) can cure wounds. So I think Healing Surge might just keep the party alive long enough to get somewhere to rest.

Personally I think with dedicated weapon being a thing, Kensei monks should be allowed to use any weapons.

Having such a short time limit on find familiar is pretty much useless. It would be better if it worked like the actual find familiar spell. It’s a ritual spell on the wizards list, but you’d have to take ritual caster or a wizard level to get the useful version.

Mark, cleave and Healing surge are all great for melee characters, giving them the position they deserve. Cleaves ruling is odd but can be worked.

Might wind up using the cleaving rules as an active during horde combat. Like if the players are in a war, whether they’re just passing through or actively intending to participate, and there are so many enemies. Or, use the rule as an ability a bbeg has and uses if the players notice him fighting in the distance. Maybe a fighter or paladin was a squire in a party that fought the bbeg, and witnessed a single swing kill the whole party

I have to say one of my favorite awesome, yet easily forgotten things is siege weapons. Partially depending on the campaign, adventurers can work together to operate these high-payload weapons.

That pirate ship over there heading your way? Turn the boat sideways and fire those 8d10 bludgeoning damage cannons!

I don't think several people should be able to work on the same item at the same time. I mean, it may be mechanically not forbidden, but I just can't visualize it without thinking it's BS.

You forgot something important about cleaving: "when an attack reduces an UNDAMAGED creature to 0 HP you can..."
If a foe is beaten down to single digits, chances are a successful attack will be able to kill it. But cleaving can only happen if your attack can one-shot a fresh creature

I started playing in the very early 80's and the one thing I always liked was the part of the dungeon masters guide was the paragraph that said that the book contained suggestions, not RULES. They are meant as loose format to create any kind of game style you were most comfortable with. I have never played a game that used experience points, for instance, just scattered times where, 'give that one a level' was said as the DM warranted. I played for twenty years, and loved it.

For the martial combat one i usually explain something like you feel like you have strength remaining and take an attack at a target nearby or that you hit through an enemy and get another one at the same time.

I linked this video to my DM friends and they all immediately implimented these for the games we currently have running now. I can say, Cleave is a really good optional rule for your martials, it made ours really happy during a boss fight that was really tough. We haven't had a chance to really use the Mark rules, but some rules are hard to remember. Maybe next time

I occasionally use knockdown attacks with multiple attacks and a high athletics score. A prone opponent has disadvantage on attacks, and grants advantage to all adjacent opponents!

Mark - optional rule from the DMG, not usable in AL.
All the crafting rules are some degree of trash and make no sense. This is why crafting rules are some of the more common third party content out there. Heliana's being an awesome option.
Cleave - another optional rule, better version available through weapon mastery in 5.5 UA. Neither legal in AL.
Using HD to heal is quite common in AL, the only time it wouldn't be common is either no one is taking relevant damage, or you aren't getting short rests. In both cases, the optional rule is also irrelevant.
Tasha's rules are all allowed in AL, so not sure why this is even on the list. Many of them became base rules in the UA.

You're gonna confuse people by not mentioning specifically that cleaving through creatures can only be applied to UNDAMAGED creatures. This is an important stipulation. C'mon man you're giving advice to a lot of rookie DMs the least you can do is be thorough.

re: cleaving, my brothers and I used to play DnD by ourselves (because the only guy we ever tried to play with as teens smelled so awfully of urine), so you can understand how one time we cleared an entire ... goblin? orc? I forget ... warren with one volley of arrows from our Monty Haul ninja++ themed home brew class "Shadow Warriors". Crom, we were young. But also it was a lot of fun playing like that, at least as long as it was just us and we all agreed on everything. We just fought tougher and tougher beasties until we ran out of Monster Manual.

We took character names from the Old Testament, so my Shadow Warrior was Adino, and my one brother's was Eleazar, and I forget the third. In later campaigns, we lored up Adino with frictionless armor and made him basically the Moorcock's Infinite Hero, and Eleazar was something else but I never cared because he wasn't MY character.

This was all 2e, over a thousand years ago ...

On the subject of monk weapons, i think that its a dumb rule for monk weapons(Kinsei or not) to never have the Two Handed property

sure versatile is an exception there, but i've always wanted to do a monk that uses a halberd as a monk weapon
although my usual suggestion to keep monks from just being able to use everything under the sun this way is to change it from no two handed property to not heavy, and im pretty sure that still keeps halberds out of the running
