Gothic 1 vs Gothic 2 - Which is Better?

Hey, I know this video is quite old but hopefully someone has an answer. I wanna play these games as they’re on Switch but I just wanna start with one for now. I don’t mind having to skip a game if it means playing a better experience. On top of that, I wanna play a game that offers the best mage gameplay as well. That’s my preferred play-style.

Funfact brother: Gothic 1 and Gothic 2 are the same game, they were just split in half because of the time constraint. Also Gothic 2 didn't had dragons in it but instead you had to stop the sleeper from coming back. In the lore there are 6 Sleeper demons and one managed to get into "our" dimension where he tried to gain as much power as possible to overwhelm the others.

The game started in the now destroyed old camp and king rhobar with his paladins are holding out in the old stone castle in orc territory. His daughter was planned to be the new sidekick of the hero. There is a whole website showing the whole development process of gothic 1 and gothic sequel and where you can download the unfinished version of the sequel (but no voice acting and german only I guess)

Surprising that the fascination lives even if you are not german

And now THQ releases Gothic 1 and 2 for Nintendo Switch. Maybe that brings the Gothic Franchise to a new Generation of Gamers.

I like the idea/feeling of th efirst plot more.
But 2 is clearly better in all other aspects. Even though NotR kinda ruined it again

I think Gothic 1 is better than vanilla Gothic 2; but Gothic 2 NotR adds so much to the game in terms of story and mechanical balances that it pushes the game past Gothic 1 and makes it the best in the series.

I like your video and thank you for making it, my only criticism is that NotR wasn't really mentioned enough, only in passing when mentioning another added dungeon;

Jharkendar, Raven, the bandit camp and the pirates are all great additions and add a lot to the game, breaking away from the original map and story but still being incorporated into the world of Gothic and Khorinis.

I started playing Gothic 1 recently and god damn, even through the outdated Warcraft 3 like graphics it's still so incredibly immersive. even when I have music playing it feels like I'm just some peasant trying to appease diego into letting me into that god damn castle

Today i bought gothic 2 gold edition off steam, and now ill go buy gothic 1, and replay them back to back, thank you for the video

G2 is my favorite, that being said - both games are masterpieces and if you want to enjoy G2 - u should first play G1... and then if u have plenty of beers or u are already drunk - u can try out G3 also.

From these 2 i liked Gothic 2 more, but otherwise, and i might get some hate, I liked Gothic 3 the most (and it is probably my favorite game ever) 😁

Gothic 1 and 2 are great. Terrible that 3 was mid and unfinished and everything else was horrible.

Gothic 2 is so incredibly bad and generic compared to Gothic 1, you can tell the developers watched a movie or something that inspired them to make a prison break story in an unconventional location and that was the only original idea they ever had.

Gothic 1 is better. it has a better: story, atmosphere and quests, that's about all that matters in a game, plus the gameplay is about the same in both games.

Gothic 2 is completely destroyed by the horrendous crit system. I would consider it better but with that system it falls behind Gothic, Risen, and Elex. Everytime you engage in combat in Gothic 2 be it melee or bows you have to put up with the unexceptable rng dice rolls to see if you do good damage, hit with your arrow, or end up getting 1 shot

The fact that a 9GB retexture mod for original Gothic was still available in late 2022 says something about hardcore fans!

I would say gothic 2 is the better game. Gothic 1 has not enough quest after you pick a camp. It gets very linear. But gothic 1 chapter 1&2 are the best.

gothic 1 all the way for me. replaying gothic 2 i never got too far because of the tedious progression introduced with notr. 1 feels like a sandbox compared and i actually appreciate less content that's tightly knit. the atmosphere, the world & music is more appealing with the dark undertone and the sinister dungeons. also you can just mug merchants and mess around stealing from people which is fun.

G1 was really unique in that they didn't use invisible walls, but instead used a game mechanic (the barrier) to serve this purpose. This is one of the few games that did so in such a natural way. The atmosphere and dog-eat-dog world it threw you in is still unmatched to this day. Aside from janky combat, these two games were truly masterpieces!

Overall, Gothic 2 was better.

i cant count how many times i went into a quiet corner and thought: they havent placed any items there. It CANT be. They CANT place something in EVERY corner. But then i find a single herb or something that tells me: jes we knew you would come here so have a little gift. Of course there are some corners where nothing is, but just enough to keep you exited.

both games suffered from limited time to publish it, In G1 they focused on main story and making unique world, In 2nd game they pushed for more content, stor suffered but world they created in G1 also gave some uniqueness for next game. I love both games but would put G2 as better game.

the whole point about transforming into a meatbug in gothic 1 is hilariously out of context as this is literally the only time you have to use a consumable to progress the story in both gothic 1 and 2 and it was confusing as heck because it left me wondering if i missed anything throughout the whole of gothic 1 and 2. i later found out they deliberately didn't include any of these sections, as gothic is a closed system and things don't respawn, meaning there was actually a possibility for a softlock.

I really thought I played g1 and g2 to death but I found archolos and its way better than both of them

A bit late to the party but eh.
As a Polish kid, Gothic was basically a part of my childhood. Now as a guy in his early 30s, I still like to replay the game every once in a while. G2 with NotR is still a benchmark for RPGs to me. No unnecesarily complicated systems, just a good solid RPG.

Playing these 2 games back to back just shows how much more busy work Gothic 2 has.
Like one of the times you get Diego out of the valley of mines and the first thing he tells you to do is go back there because he forgot his gold and even admits "Yes! I know we passed where I hid the gold on our way back"
Even the game director knew that it was busy work but kept it in any way.
While Gothic 2 is bigger and has a bit more mechanics, I still think that Gothic 1 is the superior option due to the way it's story flows and the questline makes a lot more sense in terms of the story progression.
Gothic 2 feels like the game does everything in it's power to slow your progression even if it means that you'll be doing a bunch of fetch quests along the lines.
More-over the expansion is just out of left field and barely ties into the story at all. It's a whole new area that just feels shoved into the world

Gothic 2: Night of the Raven, it's literally triples ammount of pleasure from Gothic 1.

I played gothic 2 first for a few times and then recently decided to play gothic 1 after. What really annoyed me is finding some spots that lead me deep into useless corners without getting rewarded for. In Gothic 2, every Corner that was easy to oversee kept some rewarding loot, scroll or weapon. In Gothic 1 there arent even half of the discoverable corners rewarding. The only things that didnt make sense in G2 were filled in NOTR.

Yeah, quests in G1 are better, there are less repetitive task of running across the world. And there is less and less side quests as the main plot begins to be more important, which for me is a big plus.

This video made me play those game. All I have to say is THANK YOU. Gothic I and II, along with Archolos: Chronicles of Myrtana, are my favorite open world rpg of all times, litterally there is no other game that manage to do what those games did.

I think G1 had better atmosphere overall, but G2 is in general better game. Also, I have 'controversial' opinion that G2 has the best fighting system of all RPG, even better than lets say From Software games. Yeah, animations sucked etc, but if you were a good fighter then regardless of your stats you could pretty much beat anyone. I was able to beat two orcs at the same time on lvl 5 ish. Yeah, granted it took forever and one hit equaled death... but I could do it... Blocking mechanic were great.

Gothic 2 doesn't have only 2 dungeons, all over Khorins are optional cave dungeons they are just more focused on fighting.

Replayed gothic 2 notr and gothic 1 recently. Gothic 2 Notr is better for sure. Gothic 1 feels rushed after chapter 4

You know why g2 quests seem worse than g1 quests? Because there are no side quests in g1. Correction. There are several of them ... maybe even a dozen. That's it. Apart from that, you have tasks to join the faction and the main ones. This is one of the biggest problems with g1. But if you don't figure it out in your head, you may think that the tasks in g2 are simply worse.
