What a tune

I believe most people misinterpret this as a love song to a woman. When I first heard this song (decades ago!), that is what I thought, too. I am convinced the "she" Morrison refers to is freedom. I believe this song is an homage to the American presidents (especially Washington, Jefferson, and Lincoln) who arguably did more for the cause of freedom than anyone who has ever lived. These are the men whose faces appear on Mount Rushmore, a granite mountain in South Dakota. These are the "men with insight, men in granite" as Morrison puts it in the lyrics of the second verse. It is difficult to explain the presence of this verse (which is sung twice) if the song is about a woman. Also, how to explain the first verse? "All the tea in China" is a common metaphor for something of immense value. The verse suggests he would throw all that away ("drop it in the deep blue sea") because the subject of the song is of greater value. One might do that for the love of a good woman. But the "men in granite" risked everything ("all the tea in China") for the cause of freedom and, in Lincoln's case, paid the ultimate price

Van The Man is lounging around the back yard, swinging on the 2 person swing, smoking a fatty music. Dude is so chill in his music. Grew up in the late 60's as a hard rock metal head but man o man Van Morrison was fuckin killer. In to the Mystic is his best in my opinion. Peace and love frim Ottawa , Canada

You gotta know that Van Morrison came out of Northern Ireland, Poor but dreaming of many things.

Van Morrison is still singing, and still on point. You should listen to "Bring it on home" at Porchester Hall 2017. He's maybe the most musically focused musician, over the years, ever. Every note, every sound, every bit, matters...every time.

This is what reaction videos are all about. Seeing pure joy listening to great art. And yes as a teenager of the 70’s this is exactly what I thought about the girls I admired.

Loved watching Lex groove to this.....I think that's how I must have looked when I first heard Van....such poetry, such passion and beauty. He's one of my all-time favorites.

Van disguises his masterpiece as a love song.
But it's really not a love song about a woman. It's a love song about American freedom. The "She" in
"She's as sweet as tupelo honey.... " is America. He's talking about the sweetness of America and American, and his imagery throughout the song supports this in no small way : throwing tea into the ocean is a reference to the Boston Tea Party, when early America protested against English tariffs on imports. The "men in granite" directly refers to the four faces on Mount Rushmore and the fortitude intrinsic to those early American visionaries

What a beautifully and artfully deceptive ode to America and to that unparalleled sweetness of American freedom.
