Ryzen 5 5500 vs Ryzen 5 5600 vs i5-12400 - What's the BEST CPU for Value?

just upgraded to a 5500 from a 3500 (i got a a320m), where i live the 5600 is $190 and the 5500 $120
so i just decided to go with the 5500 because 5600 is too expensive for too little performance improvement, if i were to buy a 5600, i should aswell just buy a r7 5700x instead, since it is going for $220

just got my ryzen 5 5500 for 77usd in malaysia yesterday,upgrading from ryzen 5 2600 using b450 mobo & rx6600xt

update: few days after I bought it the price dropped by 10 dollar 😤🗿🤣

I have a 5500 on a b450 and rx 6500 xt and 32gb of 3200 and it works great for me

I guess I’m a bit late to this party but was watching this and he’s got a good perspective. The 5500 is slower but not enough really to justify the extra cost of a 5600 or better and a higher end board if you are on a budget.

I’ve got one of these CPUs , I think last year I paid around $90 at microcenter but they are now $97.99. However still not a terrible deal when you consider you can get a cheap board for about $62.99. Although if you are really a cheapskate they’ve got the 3600 for $79.99 so still possible to put together a budget gaming box.

R5 5600 is £115 just now...msi b550 vdh wifi motherboard is £120. Intel i5 12400 is £170 and msi pro b760m-a wifi is £140. Much better value and similar performance for the first combo

Got the 5500 for 65USD in the Philippines. Insane value.

The 5500 is monolithic and has double the memory write speed of the 5600, so the lack of L3 is kind of irrelevant. In web based multitasking, the 5500 will feel much snappier.

I bought 5500(new) with 75 usd a few months ago, cool (with the stock fan), fast and cheap, nothing to complain about, by the way as u guys all know, its also an unlocked cpu.

Wow the comments are surprisingly calming to see, i agree that the cpu is lacking a bit compare to 5600 but it's just because it was paired with 3080, and more over if you are coming from a no experience at all and want to build a fairly budget pc, you won't notice that this is a 110$(100$ now) it doing it's job.

You say that you played multiplayer titles and had no problems like those are the challenging titles that will show weakness when in fact those are the easiest titles to play.

So i see a big flaw on your way of checking things out.
You are better off trying heavy graphic single player titles like Cyberpunk if you want to test the limits of the CPU.

I already had a B450 so this was a good upgrade from an R3 and it is a perfect match for a 6650xt and makes a monster 1080p machine. People get hung up on benchmarks.

R5 3600 + 2060S is a good lower to mid range setup

It's a matter of 50% price increase for 5% performance when going from 5500 to 5600. Full stop.

I had a Ryzen 5 5500 platform. replaced the i5-12400. along with the headboard. But I don't have any increase in framerate in games and even in some games I have less than before (My GPU is a GTX 2060 Super). You should warn your viewers in your tests that these differences will be noticeable only on top GPUs. You exposed me to unnecessary financial expenses? Who will now reimburse me for the money thrown down the drain ?!??!

I'm here 6 months later because I'm on AliExpress right now in Spain......and I can get a 5500 for 99 euros, or a 5600 (not X) for 138 euros...........So which one??

I got the ryzen 9 3900x for $100. Rtx 2080 super for $200. 16gb ddr4 3000mhz ram for $10. 1tb nvme ssd for $43 brand new too. Pc case $20. My motherboard b550 was $20.

Thank you for being the reviewer to finally making me feel good about purchasing a Ryzen 5500 and B450 (just last month - under $400 CAD with 1TB M.2). Every other review kept saying it wasn't good value, but for me it was shockingly affordable to get my first Ryzen, DDR4 and NVME capable computer. I've been just "getting by" for years with Intel Gen 2, 3, and 4 systems for years and now I've finally got a system that has some real performance.

As an overclocker I needed to go with the 1400f. It's simply amazing what can be achieved with low price m-die ddr5 and bclk oc'ing this cpu. I got it all core prime stable to 5.2 GHz and the ram to 6400 cl32. This boils down to 5% more multi threading performance than the 7600X offers (on par with 5800x) and single threaded performance of Intel cpus three times the price. The experience was worth it. Moneywise ... not so :)
Mobo 220, cpu 170, ram 200 (32gb). A "cheap" Z690, 12600k and DDR4 would have cost around the same. Or a 5800X3D build. But bclk oc is too much fun to pass on it when it shows up every few years :)

On aliespress you can find r5 5500 for 90 euro, its a great value and good updage path for me(i have r5 3400g)

I accidentally orders the 5500 when shooping for a 5600. However i am most certainly going for the 6700xt because of that mistake. Thanks for makeing me feel better about it.

I got a ryzen 5 5500 from newegg for $89 USD with cooler and can't complain about the performance, it was a major upgrade compared to my ancient I7 3770k. Altogether i'm happy with my purchase!

It's true, you DON'T need an 8 or 16 core CPU. Hyperthreading/SMT is key. 4 cores works great, and 6 cores gives you room for games to expand into in the next year or two. I can't see anyone saying '12 threads isn't enough' for at least the next 5 years.

For last decade been using AMD FX8320. One week ago, I bought a used Asus ROG STRIX Z390-E motherboard & Intel i7 8700 non K variant for $50 dollars total. Before that was able to snag a EVGA EVGA GTX 1080 SC 8GB for $40 dollars.

While the i7 8700 is not fast compare to the new stuff out on the market. It does offer me a nice improvement in both single core & multicore performance over the FX8320 I been using.

I hope budget mid tier Intel boards adopt more widely the bclk oc capabilities/design that allows it edit: for non k skus

Imo, Pre-Owned is the way to go, and that's my motto, I just picked up a Ryzen 5 5600x on the used market for only $145 complete in box with cooler, I would absolutely recommend finding good deals on the used market for a 5600x or a 7 3700x-3800x CPU, get it for less than $160 and you won't have to worry about any sacrifices whatsoever, you get both the best performance and value,
