It's funny how things turnout, I watched Carson then Letterman almost every night growing up. I remember being upset that NBC broke their promise to Letterman to take over when Carson retired, instead putting in Leno. But Leno grew on me in 1992 when he took over for Carson, so when Letterman went to CBS with a new format/style, I quickly lost interest and became a Leno fan. I would say Leno is just a likable person in general, and while Letterman can be likable, he is just a little more edgy in nature.

I've read that Johnny Carson picked Dave Letterman to replace him on the Tonight Show and up to retirement thought Letterman would be in his seat! However it was the producers that decided on Leno and made the switch without informing Johnny! I vote Letterman! 😃

And now you know why Leno got Carson's gig and not Letterman.

I saw Jay at clubs several times before he made it big....some of his funniest stuff was ad-libbing with the audience! He has the quickest wit I've ever seen and it was HILLARIOUS!....He's the King!

I know they all do it, but Jay Leno recycled his jokes more than any comedian out there especially that one about the three ages of man winging through space. He did that one on Letterman show six years earlier.

Leno was on Letterman several times. There is video of it. I had VHS of several of them. He was even better than this. Saw him live back the, like 1982 or so. Great stuff . He stiffened up too much when he got the show permanently. There is also the fact that Letterman was promised the show, but they stiffed him and gave it to Leno. That is why letterman went to CBS. And Letterman, though funny, was callous. When Andy Kaufman was on (with the neck brace still on) with the wrestler who pile drove him, the wrestler got up and again manhandled Kaufman, and Letterman sat there laughing. You NEVER saw anything so low class happen with Johnny.

You can see why Johnny hand picked Jay to take over the show. They had great chemistry and Leno was always witty and spot on. To make Johnny practically fall off his chair meant you were in good company with him.

Jay Leno is one of those comedians that on stage his act is bland but put him at a table with other comedians and he’s the funniest guy at that table

I grew up with abusive parents. Staying up late & watching The Late Show & Johnny made me laugh & salvaged (most of) my sanity.

I’m not a huge fan of Jay, being more of a Letterman/Conan guy, but the way all of his contemporaries speak of him he must have been a force to reckon with back in the day.

I miss the in-flight magazines. I don't see them on airplanes anymore.

The good ol days when it was ok to roast anything. Just don't swear. This skit would never fly today. Too many advertisers, sponsors and individuals poked fun of that would cry today.
