Chances are to think that not many people afford suvs makes me thing that I am safer by a margin if I drive a suv in case someone (non suv driver) will crash frontaly into me

SUVs shouldn’t be on the road, always blocking the drivers view , the motor accident commission knows about the hazards of SUVs but won’t do anything about it because really they are not concerned with road safety, SUVs good for roll overs too.

Sorry i must disagree suvs are safer mostly due to size and weight in a traditional head on you will be safer in a bigger car but suvs have a major weakness which is rolling in side collisions but in most crashes a suv will fuck up a sedan.

Of course it could be a complicated issue, but all in all, over all and statistically speaking of course the larger vehicle is safer, so sedans are safer than minis and SUVs & pick-ups than sedans. In my country, Israel, many people buy these tiny mini cars which we wrote off immediately. We got a nice sized sedan and for our next vehicle we our looking at an SUV.

Modern day unibody SUVs are equipped with ESC (Electronic Stability Control) and are less likely to rollover compared to the older days body-on-frame SUVs without ESC.

Plenty of examples of medium SUV'S being hit side on then roll and end up on the roof. I reciently drove past an accident site where a SUV was on the roof. Don't ever recall seeing a sedan on it's roof. Sedan 1 SUV 0

Thank you John for your video on this. These safety questions are hardly addressed by auto experts and I appreciate you for doing this. What is the use of a reliable car if it won’t keep my family safe. Could you shed your thoughts on the below please?

According to IIHS in USA, a bigger, heavier vehicle provides better crash protection than a smaller, lighter one, assuming no other differences. The longer distance from the front of vehicle to the occupant compartment in larger vehicles offers better protection in frontal crashes. Heavier vehicles also tend to continue moving forward in crashes with lighter vehicles and other obstacles, so the people inside them are subject to less force. The number of deaths per million registered vehicles in USA is much lower for mid-sized or larger SUVs. Going by this, it seems that a mid-sized or large SUV is much better than a Corolla for example.

What's safer? That's easy. Tesla Model X or a Tesla Model S. They have mass and crumple zones. You don't t want to be hit by one that's for sure.

The visibility. You sit high and see out much better in a SUV, generally speaking(like subaru forester), ladies especially love that. Passive safety wise almost every car/suv scores 5 stars nowadays.

Car is safer lighter weight means better braking, lower centre of gravity leads to better handling dynamics and less chance of a rollover. It’s best to avoid the crash altogether and the car will be the better at avoiding the crash. And from the perspective of other road users and pedestrians, please choose the car, it’s safer for everyone else too.

We had a falcon years ago ,great car,we bought a territory as it was higher and as we traveled austraya! It gave an elevated view of road ahead and anything that hopped/ ran onto it!!, while in WA we enjoyed benefits of stability control and abs combined when a emu decided to cross road in front of us! With van in tow behind it made for some breath holding responses.thankfully we were travelling at prescribed limit of 80kmh and caused no harm to this amazing AUSSIE bird.Merry Christmas John and family

My father in law crashed with an old DKW (you know, those cars that later became Audi), sitting on his moped, in the 50's. He could drive away on the moped, but the DKW was totaled. Reason he wasnt injured was that he throwed himself off the moped.

Once T boned a Toyota troupe carrier 4x4 that ran a Stop sign. Me in a Mazda Astina had a crumpled nose the Toyota did a side to side slide followed by a two and a half rolls and a 180deg spin on its roof. The driver was in a rush to get to Macas drive through instead got a trip to the hospital and their arm stitched up.

You're less likely to crash in a car (better control and handling) but once the crash has begun you're better off in the SUV.

I think generally people prefer SUVs because they "feel" safe. Are they more safe in a head on or t-bone collision with a larger vehicle? Probably. But the car, being lighter and more maneuverable, is probably going to give you a better chance to avoid the collision. And not only is a car probably better in a rollover, the lower the vehicle the less likely it is to roll over in the first place. Remember the early 2000s chevy blazers and how easily they rolled over? Last, because SUVs are more expensive, for the same $$ you can buy a higher trim level car with potentially more safety features.

I’d make an argument that, all else being equal, you’re better off sharing the road with vehicles that are of a similar size and shape to yours. Ballina to the Gold Cast is rather a special case of a journey, but eyepoint height can often determine how far ahead you can see in traffic. This is particularly true if you’re driving in heavy motorway traffic.
John’s point about the difference in vehicle mass is relevant, but Kia is a smart enough company to have engineered the systems (brakes, suspension, crumple zones, airbags, etc) according to this difference. And in a head-on between a Cerato and Sportage, with equal passenger and cargo loads, statistically the Sportage will be better off due to it’s higher mass.
