Great tutorial. I hunt public so more often than not I hunt behind a Ghost Blind. I do some of the things that you mentioned. (scent control, Play the wind. etc. I always try to find a windfall or other cover to help stay hidden. Wondering if you have any other tips for hunting ground blinds. Thanks

New hunter here. Thank you for bringing up sky lighting. I spooked 3 bucks this season and was wondering how in the world they saw me. I was about 25-30ft up in a tree and they somehow would always look up at me and do that head nod then dip. I guess I have to pick my trees out a little more careful and find some cover around them 🤦🏽‍♂️

Good video. I suggestion to all hunters. In your preseason hunt move branches and twigs from your trail in yo avoid noise going in. Also wear cloths with outer shell that doesn't make noise when you brush up against branches and tall grasses.

Lol great advice....I let my young boys watch it.... Sometimes it's better to hear smart advice from someone other than your dad.... They both said dad he's taking about all the same things you talk about, I said see I'm not the only one.... We always talk about the three super powers all deer have, and that we can't let them use their super powers against us... Sight, sound, and smell. And it payed off just the other day my youngest son and I still hunted a think fence row system that is surrounded by standing corn we ended up slipping in on a beautiful red fox only 8 feet away...I told him he won the day because I've only been able to to that once in my life on a fox and you just pulled it off, that 7 year old was filled with joy.

Foreign sounds, keys in pocket, change in pocket anything not heard in the timber. I used to cover my stand where I placed my feet with a rubber mat. Mud breaking loose from your boots clinking against metal or anything falling from trees.

Tidbit about red light. It doesnt cause your eyes to dilate as much so you can keep nightvision after using it.

Great tips! I am brand new hunter and ive never knew most of this stuff. The info about their sight and how they buikd a mental picture by moving their head and looking away and back is golden knowledge. Ive been close to deer outside of hunting situations and seen them do that. Obviously i knew they were looking at me, but i didnt know whay they were actually doing.

I picked up alittle information. But I have to hunt from a box stand because I can't climb a tree, I always spray down with scent killer, and when I get into my blind I spray down everything I touch and then spray again about every 45 minutes. But you said use a red light and I was always told to use a green light, will that make a difference? Also I wear camo bottoms and a black shirt and my stand is painted black also with blackout curtains, is that alright?

The deer doesn't so much smell that is human or not ! The deer smells something that is different , doesn't matter what it is ,it is different and ndoes not belong there , was not there before ! Like you said letting your sent blow into an area you want hunt in .

About deer's sight , the shape of the head and shoulders . No matter what color the head and sholders is what most animals see ( the large hood on a old ancient hunting cloak had a purpose) ! Blue glows to deer like a we might see something lit with ultraviolet light ( black light ) , but to the deer it's like a glowing poster under a black light .
Great information ! This information used to be hard to find , so few knew !

Interesting video. I hunt archery, muzzleloader, and rifle. Certainly some good tips, but I want to add a few from my experience. I have killed 3 deer in the past year by stalking into bow range. I shot 2 of them in their beds. I have killed many other deer by different methods also. If you want to try spot and stalk or still hunting, learn to MOVE SLOWLY. All senses have what is called a detection threshold, when a stimulus becomes noticeable. Move very slowly when you are stalking a deer, and you can often stay below the detection threshold. It might take an hour to move 50 yards towards a beded deer.
Also, stay low and use cover. A bedded deer has a low vantage point. Crouching, crawling, or just hunching over decreases your visible profile - a lot. Keep trees or other cover between you and the deer as much as possible. If stalking moving deer, move when they are moving. When they are moving, they are making noise and their visual field is constantly changing. If it is windy, especially when leaves are still on the trees, move when the wind blows. This creates cover noise and visual static from leaves and branches moving. Stay patient and focused. Have fun and safe hunting!

Always have to laugh at the time I tried rattling deer while in a tree stand, rather high up. Startted rattling with plastic deer antlers. Heard a snort below me. Looked down at a Really nice buck at the base of the tree, looking up at me holding fake antlers. Oh well, still get a laugh out of that.

I hunt from the ground. When not in a pop-up blind, it is hard to resist the urge to react to sounds from behind, but one must resist the urge to turn and look. I've been busted too many times doing that--even by deer not behind me that have managed to sneak up on me in front or to the side of me.

It helps to understand a deer's vision. The deer has eyes in which each cell is taller than it is wide, thus in a deer's vision a five unit square will involve say two and a half cells in the vertical, but its horizontal vision will involve five cells. In this example, one can see how a deer will see vertical objects with less clarity, less definition, say its 760 pixels, but its horizontal definition is 1080. Vertical objects are more blurry. Horizontal has much better definition than vertical. Thus if your laying down they have a much better image of you than if your vertical. The animals in the woods are horizontal, and its horizontal they see best. So it is that movement is truly your worse enemy. I have snuck up on a group of deer with no camo at all, no cover. Plain sight, standing in the open. I waited for their heads to all go down, their jaws napping at the grass and took a step forward to stop and freeze. Their heads come up, look around as they chew, go back down and they did so kind of on a schedule of certain time. Im guessing I got quite close, maybe about twenty to thirty yards before they began getting nervous. Looking at me a few times, they broke their pattern and they had to settle in to make a new one. A few more steps and a couple began to circle me, trying to get wind. With this the gig was up. Once they got wind they bolted hard. Like an explosion, they scattered.
Many decades ago when I first learned to time the heads of the deer for their patterns of down to eat, up to look it was called the Indian Touch. Supposedly with proper dress, proper eye movement, proper breathing etc one can get damn close, and stories existed of Indian Elders who taught the skill who could walk slowly up to a deer at arms length before they bolted. Personally... nah. Ten yards is my record. Only one predator is vertical, and they have trouble seeing it. Movement is your foe. THAT they see. Especially horizontal movement.

Don't move, I've stood with deer just 15 feet or so away for minutes at a time without the deer seeing me...Standing right on the trail, 3 deer almost next to me for almost 10 minutes and none of them noticed me......For years when I was younger I always heard scent but after years in the woods it was always movement or some sound I made.

Red lights will also not destroy your own night vision. If your eyes are adjusted to the dark. Yellow lights will totally destroy that, but red will not. You can turn it on and off as much as you need and your eyes will stay adjusted to the dark.

In terms of safety, using a flashlight for accessing your hunting site is a good way to let other hunters know your not a deer. I know two hunters who have been shot because they were not using a flashlight and were mistaken for a deer walking through the woods.

I’ve always been taught that deer need to connect any two senses to get spooked. One sense (sight, sound or smell) will alert, but if they connect any two of them you’re going to get a white flag.

This morning I forgot my headlamp. It has a red light. So I had to make my way to an old wooden stand and climb it in the pitch dark. Needless to say I made noise. However. Not 15 min after I was in my stand and he before the sun would even come up and it would brighten up I had 4-6 deer walking around the tree I was in. It was super weird to me. So dark I couldn't see them on the ground till I seen the white tail take off. They stomped one doe hissed about two minutes in. I slowly moved my head maybe an inch and that's when they all took off. Super shit start to the day and to top it off I didn't see anything for 4 hrs till I walked out.

Deer, unlike humans, lack built-in UV protection in the cornea. This means blues and to a lesser degree yellows 'pop' more, especially if something in those shades moves. I imagine it's rather like the difference we humans see when putting on a pair of polarized sunglasses.
