The real question is, if the treaty of San Francisco forced Japan to give up all territories it gained by colonization or imperialism, why didn't Japan relinquish Okinawa and Ryukyu, given them they too were annexed by Japan in 1879

To this day, the Japanese people don't actually consider the Okinawans to be Japanese

I know this because I came across a Japanese song recently, and asked my Japanese friend "Hey what's this Japanese song", and her reply was "Oh that's not Japanese, that's Okinawan", despite the song clearly being sung in the Japanese language

To the Japanese people, there's a very clear distinction between them and the Okinawans

Regardless of who they belong to, they are part of the first island chain which is of great strategic value for any potential invasion of Taiwan, which Japan would almost certainly be drawn into.

Tbh, I doubt Taiwan wants them at this point in history. It would just be another island they'd have to defend, and they already have too many of them. Maybe after China recognizes Taiwan's independence (ha).

A little bit element to discuss, I think Taiwan Island and Chinese Mainland respectively under control by different regimes since 1950, not 1945. The KMT government recaptured Taiwan Island in 1945 and lost majority of Chinese mainland in 1950.

Taiwan is a part of China and Taiwan’s claim of territory is much bigger than that of China as a whole.

Quite biased against China but better than most Western productions.
1. Taiwan was never de facto independent from China in 1945. In 1945 China took back Taiwan from Japan. If you mean the separate rule of Taiwan and mainland China, that happened in 1949/1950. If you mean when Taiwanese started seeking independence from China then it was the 1990s.
2. Allied agreements on Japan prior to the end of WWII and leading up to the founding of the United Nations limited Japan's legal territory to only the 4 home islands and by this international law/precedent Japan never had any legal claims to Okinawa/Ryukyu, which was placed under UN/US administration, which the US handed over control to Japan later. Rather Okinawa/Ryukyu under which the Diaoyu/Senkaku falls under is a semi-autonomous kingdom administered by Japan seeking independence.

As an outside observer (mostly, American here), I think Japan was very fortunate to retain all of the Okinawan Islands all the way down south nearly to Taiwan. Waging such an aggressive war and losing usually results in some consequences. Senkaku/Diaoyu is not part of Okinawa. In a fair world China/Taiwan would get them.

私自身日本人ですがDiaoyu/Senkaku問題がこれほどスケールが大きい話だとは知りませんでした。東アジアはこれからもっと加熱していくでしょうから、海外の学生さんも研究対象にどうですか?(唐突な勧誘)
I'm very impressed by your very impartial commentary!🥰
I am Japanese myself, but I didn't know that the Diaoyu/Senkaku issue was such a large scale and interesting story.
East Asia is going to heat up even more in the future, so foreign students, why don't you make it a subject of your research? 😁

As a Korean, really interesting point. The region is exactly located near Okinawa, where many merchant ships for global trade can pass and China-US power collision can occur. Also, recent days it became more difficult as the natural resources are about These islands. I want to hear the reason why you Chinese/Taiwanese and Japanese call these islands your own island. Could you leave a reply for me? I learned little about Chinese, so you can reply in Chinese too.

我是韩国人,这个领土问题我觉得很有意思。我想听你们日本人和中国人,台湾人的根据为什么这些岛是你们的领土。我会说汉语一点儿,写中文也可以。

The Japanese have in their possession, an authentic Chinese document housed in the Yaeyama Museum which refers to an important event.
It is a Chinese consul's 1920 letter of appreciation for the rescue of Chinese 31 fishermen washed ashore in the Senkaku Islands, it was addressed to the officials of Yaeyama District, Okinawa Prefecture, Empire of Japan.
In other words,……pre communist China in 1920 agreed that the Senkaku Islands belonged to Japan…..keeping in mind that there were already 200 Japanese fishermen and their families living on the island long before the Sino-Japanese War.
The Chinese communists arrived at a later date, lied, twisted and tortured the truth, faked their history in order to cheat and steal the islands from Japan.
The islands were an easy heist, once China's history was faked, they were able to fake their maritime boundaries followed by their fake islands. This then gave them a fake exclusive economic zone around those fake islands which in turn gave them fake oil, gas, mineral and fish rights, In other words, one lie built on top of another, on top of another, in some ways quite similar to a giant Ponzi scheme with no substance what-so-ever.

Since you mentioned San Francisco peace treaty, it's worth noting that almost the whole pre-soviet world didn't sign it. Neither China signed it. South Korea didn't sign it.

Why did Merica sign it without those countries? Well we are just dealing with our colonies so none of you communists' business 😂
