Carthago indeed hired forces from otther regions to qonquerer more lands, they had enough gold to pay them. But they also had a proffesional army of 10.000 soldiers. They where never used for far missions. They where only there for the safety and protection of the city of carthago ... It was not a big force but they where well trained soldiers payed by the city because they where full time soldiers. Thanks Invicta for sharing youre wisdom and posting this nice doc !!!

Wow sourcing military from mercenaries is such a horrible move for so many reasons I don't even know where to start. Great short term play but Long term very horrible and actually very bad for the empire. Never be in anyway shape or form reliant on others. recipe for disaster.

You disgusting ignorant decadent barbarians who dare talk about the holy Greeks. The sacred band of Thebes was a group of very good friends, it was done on purpose, in order for the soldiers to fight better. They were bound by the sacred institution of friendship which was protected by law. No text, no proof exists whatsoever that claims the opposite. Your abnormality is yours and yours only. Homosexuality in Ancient Greece was banned by law, gays had no rights and were murdered. Filthy homosexuals, you want to believe those lies so you feel better about your abnormality.

The guy you illustrated as the typical Carthaginian of the Sacred Band looks like something you can only find at a gym that sells steroids out of the back door. Our elite warriors of the 21st century, who, without question, are the best specimens of warriors in the history of the world. I don't care which nation of the industrial world you choose...the UK, Russia, China, France, Germany or the United States...very, very few of them look like that. The armies of the world have always been and always will be physically developed but look more like if a ultra marthon champion mother bore the child of an olympic champion wrestler. They are, generally speaking, athletic but not muscle bound like that. They must be able to run, swim and ruck march for long distances over long periods of time. That keeps men from building bodybuilders bodies. It is not possible for men, other than the very, very, very few who can build their bodies to look like that and must do so using chemical enhancement, for men who's job entails periods of ultra marathon activity, poor nutrition due to operation tempo forcing missed opportunities for meals and long mission hours prohibitive to sleep and physical rest to develop a body like you see in your video.
Though the United States military's tier one and two personnel are physical specimens that are highly fit, have high muscular density, low body fat and look good in uniform, they are hardly close to that guy who looks like he could compete in the Mr Universe competition. Though there are some men in those units who could, given the desire to leave their profession of arms to pursue a life chasing magazine covers, who could look like that. Most men cannot even with dangerous levels of PEDs.

Modern soldiers- "Try not to look important. The enemy may be low on ammunition."
Ancient soldiers- "I made this breastplate out of solid gold and fastened diamonds to my shield so that everybody knows how rich and important I am." 🤣😂🤣😂

Of all the classical era armies (& navies), I've always held a fascination for the Carthage gang and it's so sad we don't know more about them pre-Hannibal. Truly the kid that grew up and went out into the world and made a name for themselves. They had an incredible grasp of social as well as militaristic requirements and world history would be far different had they not locked horns with the Romans. Regardless, had Hannibal been provided the resources to siege cities, the history books would be very much different from what we have.

1 Blessed is the man that walketh not in the counsel of the ungodly, nor standeth in the way of sinners, nor sitteth in the seat of the scornful.
2 But his delight is in the law of the LORD; and in his law doth he meditate day and night.
3 And he shall be like a tree planted by the rivers of water, that bringeth forth his fruit in his season; his leaf also shall not wither; and whatsoever he doeth shall prosper.
4 The ungodly are not so: but are like the chaff which the wind driveth away.
5 Therefore the ungodly shall not stand in the judgment, nor sinners in the congregation of the righteous.
6 For the LORD knoweth the way of the righteous: but the way of the ungodly shall perish.

Carthage is one of the most underrated Military powers of Antiquity. I feel like most don’t do them justice and not even Total War Rome does them justice. Yes it’s true they hired mercenaries but so did everyone. They didn’t have an over reliance on them, they often had a lot of Ally’s more than anything. Rome would have you think carthage were just rich barbarians who hired a bunch of mercenaries to do their fighting which isn’t true. Like I said what we know of carthage is what Rome wanted us to know. And they had a burning hatred for them not because they deserved it but because Romans were the epitome of prideful arrogance and what do you do to the only adversary that truly ever rivaled you? Defame them and wipe them from history. What we do know is Hannibal brought Rome to its knees defeating the Largest army it ever fielded. Ever. And out of honor didn’t sack Rome because he figured he’d give them an opportunity to surrender. And it was that decision alone that set in motion Romes eventual triumph over carthage. A part of me looking back just as a spectator of history would have wanted Carthage to win just so we could know more accurately about them. But I really appreciate this channel really trying their best to speculate in a positive light and fill in those gaps. I really Love of how they depict and portray the sacred band in this video. I love the intricate tattoos and body paints a long with the jewelry and intricate clothing. I wish Total war would have tried a bit harder with the look of Carthage.

Carthage's relyance on mercenary troops is likely the main reason for their eventual defeat...

What is it with peoples fascination with an unexceptional unit? The Sacred Band never achieved success in their entire history. Ever. They never displayed advanced maneuvers, they never managed to break any enemy formation, and they are never mentioned after being massacred at White Tunis. The only thing that separated them from rank-and-file Carthaginians is that they were not total dogshit and thus stood their ground.

There is nothing legendary or special about them, honestly.

I thought the real Sacred Band was from Thebes-The Sacred Band of Thebes, a troop of soldiers that consisted of 150 gay male couples, formed the elite force of the Theban army in the 4th century BC. The rationale behind the Band's composition was that lovers would fight more fiercely and cohesively than strangers with no ardent bonds.
