Upon viewing the comments, I was skeptical of this video. However, after reviewing this video too many times due to YT's delightful automated replay feature, I understand the argument's claims despite its flaws. This video didn't reference Dragon Ball Super addressing how Time Travel was reserved for Gods (or maybe only Zeno) and was outlawed (if not punishable by inexistence). I also believe Whis clarified that time travel is akin to creating a different universe. Wasn't that the driving aspect of that whole arc's solution?

This argument holds up in some ways in that Present Trunks is still similar to Future Trunks in that he has that weird, problematic attraction to Mai. To be serious, there's plenty of discord in the Present Universe so there's a strong likelihood that he can be pushed to the brink as Dragonball constantly does this for most of its characters (sorry Yamcha). There's plenty of times where Goku, Vegeta, Gohan, etcetera have had plenty of traumatic events that caused them to go the next level (e.g., Goku's Death causing Gohan to reach SSJ2). Keep in mind that Gohan doesn't like to fight and I think Totally Not Mark does an excellent job breaking down his character.

However, rambunctious Present Trunks loves to fight despite how much comfort his family's wealthy lifestyle affords him. Sure, Future Trunks went through a lot of crap (i.e. losing all those he loved) that has caused him to have plenty of rage... it's in his half-Saiyan blood. I'm not trying to downplay the tragedy of his situation but he's only an anime character despite our childhood attachment. Future Trunks just seems to have universally bad luck because his world requires him to figure it out by himself all the time. Still, there will always be an existential threat so Present Trunks will have the support to mold him enough to surpass Future Trunks astronomically, especially with access to Whis and his friendly competition with Goten (similar to friendly Goku and not-so-content Vegeta).

The main point of this video is to discuss Present Trunks's potential, which means that we haven't seen how Present Trunks would perform in the future. Given the pattern of the show, thematically his experience would be characterized by deep heartbreak from overwhelming challenges brought about by existential threats. After all, he was knocked out by his own Majin Father during the Buu Saga... I haven't even been hit that hard by my father and I'm a minority. No disrespect to Toriyama's memory, but I hope he doesn't forget how to build Present Trunks consistently true to his entire character arc throughout the entire series.

The lack of explaining this is likely due to time constraints but it sparked a healthy dialogue. And yes... I spent way too much time thinking about the pointed arguments made and my response...but isn't that the point of art?

Xeno Trunks is still the best and strongest iteration of the character, though!

But they're not the same person. Future trunks is from a time line he's trying to prevent or fix thus making present Trunks incapable of becoming Future Trunks by not being in the situation and training needed to reach that potential. However, one would say he has greater potential because he can train with the z fighters he never could because of their deaths.

I"d disagree. The reason why Future Trunks has a rage form is because he has constantly had to fight to keep those who he loves, and humanity, alive and lost so much, then was told that all the deaths were because of him when all he's ever done is try to protect others selflessly. Trunks in the main timeline hasn't had any troubles outside of Majin Buu. He's had a cake walk and is a completely different person than his future self so I'd say he doesn't have the same potential, as though genetically they may be the same, they are completely different people.
