Time did splinter. Duel Links apparently had a sequel story to 5D's which shows that all of Illyaster did was for nothing. Z-ONE's world is still dead. And the Meklord apocalypse still happened.

Its honestly a great theory. Yusei definitely wouldn't want to make the same mistakes and would want to provide a new route for humanity, so XYZ monsters seem like a natural way to go... which then goes to ARC-V. As much as some people don't like that show, I personally think that it is canon to the rest of the timeline. Its just that by the time of ARC-V's original universe, humanity's energy crisis was solved, leading to Standard, Fusion, Synchro, and XYZ being all optimal and safe ways to summon. We all know what happens next, sadly.
