I'm a person who, politically, most would consider left of center. That said, I'm a Southerner. Lee was a complex individual. Yes, he lead the opposition to adapt to a slave free society. However, he seemed to have an internal, personal conflict with antebellum southern ideology. We can't dispute that slavery had to be abolished, but I have to wonder why Lee felt so compelled to defend the old south ideology if he had his own misgivings.

When it comes to that constantly on the offensive style of warfare all I have to say is this Germany may not have won world war 1 but the French or British certainly weren't marching on Berlin, when you are truly outmatched it pays to go on the defensive and bleed your enemy as much as possible at the very least you'll be able to come to some kind of negotiated peace even if it's not very favorable for you at all at least the enemy still hasn't occupied all of your territory

The civil war was never about slavery, it was about states rights and money. The confederacy looked out to Britten and France for help in return for Georgia gold. Abraham Lincoln found this and then lied and said it was about freeing the slaves then France and England backed off. Robert Lee never owned any slaves, but Grant owned over 10.
