Yeah, 1x on road road bikes. NO. Those of us who do really push it, whether racing or whatever, know the feeling when you're on the limit and your ratio changes between gears are too big. 15 to 16, 19-21, these 1 tooth jumps are natural and keep you from totally blowing up on climbs or big ring on the flats. 1x can't give you that.

I find 25 mm tyres fine. I don't understand the obsession with fat tyres. They make sense for dirt roads but they are heavy and contra-aero.

Road bike and Gravel bike only 2x. 1x should be enough for MTB.

Only pros need loads of gears is a bit of a daft claim. It's us mortals who need a wide range of gears.
And if 1x has a wide range, you are forever changing gear to find the right cadence. Even then you usually lack top end gears and spin out. I spin out on flat with my FS's 1x12 and it's very hilly here.
I regularly ride my 1x setup along a 1.5% and 4km climb and am constantly changing between gears, because they are all wrong. On my 2x I can select the right gear and that's it, job done.

We live in UK so full mud guards are a winter must! Rear ones fine but what about front wheel that kicks up just as much water/mud on to your front/frame 😂

Anybody who thinks 1x is a good idea for road bikes doesn't ride in hilly areas. I have a 105 mechanical groupset 2x11, and living and mostly riding in the Vale of Glamorgan, it is a rare ride I don't use both extremes and almost everything in between.

Love my gravel bike as well….with full mudguards. Even have done very well racing with them on in muddy Alaskan silt. One-by on the road or gravel? No thanks. I want more gear range without a rubbish lid sized cassette. Integrated fully internal cables? Again, no thanks. I want to be able to easily service my own gear on the road. (You want to suffer with fully internal cabling but can’t stand installing full mudguards?? They’re a cinch by comparison.). Wireless or wired electric anything? Meh. And I’ll stick with hot wax for chain lube, thanks very much. Everything stays so much more clean, including my legs.

Disagree that people only use/need some of the gears on a traditional road bike. I use all my gears. Not all the time on every ride, but i do use them depending on how hilly the ride is.

My Tacx T3050 Spider work stand .. been my best investment ever, I've used it virtually everyday for all manner of work. Solid, obviously durable and folds up into a bag when needed. You don't realise how much you make use of a good work stand until you one one...

Gravel bikes can do it all in England. I think in other parts of the world you'll be hurting without a road bike and a hard tail (or full suspension if you can swing it!). But yea, if you can only have one bike...

I tried 1x on a roadbike, it works until the first steep ramp comes, then you curse it. If you live in the lowlands with only small hills, no problem, everything else I would always recommend 2x.

For me the Topeak Ratchet Rocket Lite NTX+ is the best bit of kit.
Its like £55 for a torq kit, all the bits you'll need, and its light and portable. Goes everywhere with me - hell I even used it to build furniture around the house!

I have a fidlcok titanium one on my mtb. I like it is quirky, but it is not very convenient. I have it a bit low on my frame, always looking for the magnets lol. The titanium bottle is also quirky, but to be honest very hard to drink from as you need to squeeze it. It also doesnt really look better, but it is different so that is fun lol. The system itself is very good and well thought out though.

My new favorite product is the Tyre Glider. Makes installing and removing the tires on my setup an absolute breeze. Maybe one of the best cycling related products I've ever purchased. Now, I don't dread removing my tubeless tires, cleaning them and replacing the sealant every couple of months.

i have ridden since i was like 2. i crashed probably hundreds of times as a kid. enough so that my knees and elbows are scarred black. boy do i have stories. i have crashed a lot less since i have become an adult, but it still happens. sometimes its pushing the limit, sometimes its stupidity and sometimes poor maintenance. i like to think i learn from my mistakes.

Are you really a bike mechanic? Why every one tries to sell 1x at the front?
Ok, you need no front shifting, but you don’t have a gear range or jumps between gears are crazy and so is your cadence. 1x is ok for mtb and commuters, but does not work for road.

Gavel bike does it all, 1x front cog. MY LBS mechanic told me that if you want to commute with it, and do gravel adventure on the weekends, you'd want a 2x. Discussion followed me raising that a 36t front single cog would not let you ride with a peloton.
