my uncle has an employee who as a child-like 8 years old i believe, would scrounge for cigarette butts to learn to smoke, because if you went to the communist khmer authorities and proved you were a smoker, they’d give you a cigarette ration and smoke breaks, so he used that to get smoke breaks so he could get some brief respite from the backbreaking labor he was forced to do- as a child

The thing to remember is, this was genocide carried out BY THEIR OWN people, not a foreign or invading force, but merely Cambodians killing their own people. None of the the Khmer Rouge were punished (the soldiers - who were kids, teenagers, and women of all ages - all turned into brutal killers) that when Cambodia was liberated by Vietnam in 1975, just started living again in society with no attempted justice. I was told (during my recent visit) that the reason why they were not brought to justice was, that they were made to do it, and their 'justice' is they have to live with what they did to others for the rest of their lives. It appears that they did what they did out of fear for their own lives, and for their families, for survival. I'm not judging, I'm just saying how it is. So basically, there's thousands of 57+ year olds living in Cambodia right now (the present) that although they were once soldiers, and were forced to kill and torture, the 'innovative' and extensive ranges of ways of torture and killing must of come from within each individual. These are people that thought of (invented), and acted out the cruellest and most tortuous ways to injure and kill their own people. That mind set was not forced, that must of come form WITHIN the individual's minds. That says something about the most evil aspect of human nature.

I know a khmer guy whose family went though this. They lost 80% of their family. The only ones who made it are the ones who fled to the States. It’s a horrific glimpse into the darkest recesses of human nature.

My fiancé is khmer and I spend a lot of time in Cambodia . I find the people absolutely beautiful and happy even after everything they have been through

My grandparents fortunately escaped Cambodia before anything bad could happen to them and my aunts and uncles. Unfortunately their other extended family didn’t make it out. When my grandparents were alive they absolutely refused to speak a word of what happened during pulpot. They shivered at the bare thought of what happened back in Cambodia. It’s nice to see someone covering a major event that my grandparents never talked about.

This is why I listen to Cambodian music. The Khmer Rouge tried to eliminate their budding rock/pop music scene as part of his "cleansing", killing amazing artists like Sinn Sisamouth, Pan Ron, and Ros Sereysothea. They may have died but their music didn't, and it evolved into great artists today like VannDa, Sreyleak, and HENG. The Khmer people are amazing musicians.

The Khmer was created by US as an insurgency against Vietnam (just like in afgan against russia), and was later funded and backed by the CCCP. And now, with Chinese inspired textbooks, many Cambodian seems to think Vietnam created the Khmer rouge. Sometimes I think to myself, as cruel as it was, maybe we should have just leave them as is and just defend our border instead. They're no friend of ours and we didn't have any reason to send help so deep, while risking a war with china which actually happened afterwards.

Alongside the Cambodians, many many ethnic minority groups suffered under Cambodian, Laos, and Vietnam rule after the vietnam war. My parents still hold alot of hatred to the soldiers that burned their homes and shoot their relatives.

I had seen a documentary 30 years ago about the people who escaped Vietnam and came to the US. The victims claimed blindness prevented them from working and claimed disability benefits. It was thought those poor souls were lying so they investigated. Through the help of psychiatrists, they discovered it is possible to see so much horror that the human body can actually cause the eyes to stop seeing. Shocking and terrifying thought. (Ray Charles was an example of this phenomenon.)
