So the same test could be done by suspending weight from the object till failure. Is you were to test rope you could suspend X amount of weight to the rope and gradually add more till failure ?

Can I use 3mm thick 25cm long and 5cm wide stainless steel piece for max 1cm (at the top) elasticity? Or will it bend permanently?

Tensile testing measures material properties while estimating the force required to break or elongate a specimen. It determines material properties that can predict the behaviors of materials and products intended for their applications. And the test aims to design materials for products with the desired quality attributes. 


The experiment uses Hooke's law to measure the strain and calculate the stress. Hooke's law is E = σ/ε, where E is the modulus of elasticity, ε is the strain, and σ is the stress. The modulus of elasticity measures the deformation of an object when the force is applied. And it is used for making a new product or improving the properties of the existing materials. 


Tensile strength and elasticity are crucial to manufacturing. In the case of brittle materials, the failure of brittle materials occurs without any apparent signs. So, it is impossible to detect a yield point. And the deformation of the material will be permanent once the stress is above the yield strength for ductile materials.

Love this process. Crazy how edge and screw dislocations travel in the material. To imagine metal of that thickness being able to do necking and break is so cool. Interesting how material goes from elastic deformation to plastic deformation. It was nice being able to see when the yield point occured on the monitor.

What was you factor of safety percentage?
