Big Muff is much better than Fuzz, the fuzz saturation is too much.

Dude. I don't get it. Your content is so good. But you put the settings in tiny WHITE FONT on a WHITE background?? People are starting to discover you. You need to pay a little more attention to those details my brother. We want you to succeed.

Hi, big fan of the channel, I have a boss katana 50 mk2 and have recently got a rams head reissue and it sounds terrible no matter what I try, it sounds nothing like how i've heard when you or other people use it no matter what pedal or amp settings i try. is it an issue that I try to use it at the lowest watt and bedroom volumes, it sounds really boxy and theres no clarity and there is lots of feedback. any help would be great thanks

IMO big muff > fuzz face, because the Muff is way more versatile, it can almost emulate the fuzz face. Whereas the fuzz face is very one dimensional…
I personally play all my gilmour solos with a big muff clone et set mine like yours in order to replicate the fuzz face on money or time

i love the tones of the rams head also i want to get one but the place i shop in alaska is out of stock for that specific one. last year in november i got the triangle which was a pedal that i thought would cover a bunch of earlier tones because i thought it was the most fuzz of the other muffs and have enough "muffiness" that could cover 1977 tones and beyond but it just has too much low end on it to cover 1977+ tones but it does cover some 2000s tones really nice. hearing rams head cover those earlier tones makes me think that when i had the chance to buy rams head in november last year that i should have gotten it. also great playing!

I tried using Muffs to get the classic silicon fuzz tones from the late 60s- mid 70s, and they were good, but just lacking something (not better or worse, just different). I ended up finally getting the Dunlop Hendrix mini Fuzz Face. It’s perfect for DSOTM and “Meddle”; it’s great for songs like “Money” and “Echoes”, where Gilmour rolls the volume on the guitar back to clean the fuzz up into an overdrive (something that you can’t really do too well with a Big Muff). That said, a Fuzz Face will not get you the tones from “Animals” or anything after. That’s a going to be a job for a Ram’s Head or Green Russian Muff.

I have heard, but never personally tried, the Keeley Moon Fuzz. It’s the fuzz/Muff found on the Dark Side pedal, and is oddly an op amp Big Muff style fuzz, but tweaked in a way that it can cover the silicone fuzz tones and Gilmour’s Big Muff tones (which is strange, because I own the Op Amp Big Muff reissue, and I can’t see it working for Gilmour’s tones).

I know it’s mass produced but the Dunlop silicon Fuzz Face actually is an awesome sounding Fuzz Face. It has BC108 transistors inside and I’ve gotten better tones out of it than the JHS Smiley and the Analogman Sun Face. And I’m playing with a Colorsound Power Boost into the fuzz. And that’s all going into a Silverface Deluxe Reverb. Amp settings: Vol at 2, Treble at 4 and Bass at 5.

These 2 pedals need to sneak off behind the speaker cabinet, get their freak on and give us the result. While I do prefer the big muff overall, I do think the fuzz phrase is also needed during the songs. Constantly switching between them would be a pain in the rear though.

Chase Tone Red Velvet 68 is a favourite, it can handle buffers ok. Russian (Green, Black, and Civil War) Muffs are my faves. I do like the Buffalo FX Ram's Head

I thought it sounded amazing both ways. They just both sound great! I think a Fuzz Face style needs a drive after - if the amp is that clean - and we all know: it's very different at volume. I have the Russian EHX reissue, which is more pushy in the lower mid & not quite as much gain, so I usually boost it my Analogman BD2 - set more like a barely driving boost - or the SD1w. I continue you to love the stuff you bring to us and the playing! Thanks!

MUSTAFA, Try using the fuzz face first STACKED with the Rams head big muff turn the big muffs drive all the way down using the big muff as an EQ pedal = Gilmours tone. You have to use the strat volume pot set at 7-8 for clean up. Try making a video lesson about this

I think the best gilmour combination is Fuzz Face and Binson Echorec, it is impossible not to think of the delay to combine with the fuzz in his tone.

I use both, germanium fuzz face and a big muff, never at the same time though. For saturated fuzz tones I don't think you can not use a germanium fuzz.

Probably not the best video to ask it but hey, he used those pedals on Money...
So anyway, you probably heard the In The Flesh Tour Bootlegs and the extended versions of Money where in the mid section of the solo, the delay "explodes" with repeats like in Fort Worth or Montreal.
Did Gilmour use another pedal with higher feedback to get the trick done rapidly or did he just change settings on the rack delay he used at the time on the fly and returned them to normal when needed?
Thank you.

A Fuzz Face goes to a glassy clean by rolling the guitar volume back a bit. The Muff does not clean up at all when you roll down the guitar volume. That is the deal breaker right there. All the people in the comments saying that the Muff can sound like a Fuzz face and do anything the Fuzz Face can do… Nope. Not that one most important thing.

It’s very close, but to my ears I think the big muff is more able to get a fuzz tone, then a fuzz trying to get a Muff tone

thats not the right fuzz face for gilmour tones. well not untill pompeii, I'm pretty sure he used germanium on meddle, but I know any fuzz sound before meddle is 100% germanium and any after is 100% silicon

you can see the dark blue fuzz face on live in pompeii photos, also, the germanium sound just doesn't sound at all like time or money. my reccomendation is the FFM1 or if you want to go really fancy, get a sunface by analogman with BC108 transistors for wembly 1974/live in pompeii or BC109 for studio dark side tones, but they are identical and there's no real point in getting the sunface, it just costs extra, the FFM1 uses BC108 transistors anyway, the BC109 just have a little more gain

I personally have the FFM1 and it gets perfect tones for dark side, slide solo of wish you were here, pompeii, wembly tones (perfect for money), the Ge one is just not the gilmour fuzz, great for hendrix though for electric ladyland tones, though he seems to have mostly used silicon anyway. he used octavio with and without the octave on "are you experienced" he used this weird silicon "axis fuzz" on axis bold as love, then on electric ladyland went back to Ge fuzz face (he was using it before he released any albums) then he went back to the octavio without the octave, but housed in a fuzz face unit for woodstock, band of gypsies and beyond

I think we need that video comparing. I'd love to see comparison between silicon fuzz face (ffm1 is the best for the price, trust me) and the Ge fuzz face, I personally already know because I have heard covers using one or the other, and Ge never has enough gain, too smooth, to much mids, not enough treble etc etc, but you do great comparisons anyway

anyone ever notice the big muff sounds kinda synth-y? I don't know, seems very electronic in some tones, I know it's an electronic circuit, but it's just got this cool feel to it that people don't really talk about

I love the classic fuzz on echoes, just needs the silicon fuzz face for more gain, but still even like this, I love it, I like the big fuzzball sound

also, tip if you do silicon, you do need a boost for wembly, it gives some of that slight velcroy, muted breakup, it does need to be after the fuzz. it just helps thicken it up like the Ge, but it still has a more gain like silicon does

A fuzz face can be made to sound almost like a muff into a driven amp. Fuzz shines where a muff would fall apart. They sound farty and downright awful into clean amps in my (admittedly worthless) opinion.
