Matt, thank you for an alternative point of view about Herbert as a scapegoat. Imagine winning an election in a landslide then losing the next election in a landslide. I hate to hear name-calling on the campaign trail.

I just read a good article on The Conversation about the crazy Democratic National Convention which led to FDR's nomination, and of course, it involved the mafia.

It also marked the beginning of 64 years of democratic control in the house of representatives except 1938 & 1946.

Progressive Norman Thomas of the Socialist Party should have won the 1932 POTUS election. Just as progressive author Upton Sinclair who wrote the EPIC book and plan (the New Deal on steroids) should have won the 1934 CA governor race--he was a darn Democrat but also to his credit a socialist (and vegetarian)--but FDR schemed to sabotage his campaign.

While maybe calling for stronger labor laws didn't help the great depression I have a hard time seeing that as a negative. However, I am not well educated on the Great Depression and its catalysts and might take a more detailed look at a later time.

Interesting Fact: Hoover actually had an advisor that been working for the presidency since Theodore Roosevelt that he had hope would help him win this election. But at the time the advisor been getting threats from those against prohibition that the advisor was strongly for to the point the advisor had a nervous breakdown and packed up and moved down to North Carolina to work in the mines like he use to without telling everyone, leaving Hoover to deal with the campaign himself. By time the advisor was found Hoover lost the election.

Here began a dark crisis for the Republican Party, since after The great depression that Herbert hoover did not know how to handle, the people did not trust the Republicans to lead the country. At first it was taken for granted that Thomas dewey would be the savior of the Republican Party, but by foolishly trusting in the 1948 Elections, the Republicans had to wait until 1952 for their savior to finally arrive, Dwight eisenhower. To say that Herbert hoover caused the Republican Party to sink and suffer a dark crisis for 24 years would be unfair since no one expected something like The great depression, if Al smith had won this dark crisis it would have fallen to the Democrats and they would have suffered the dark crisis, in the end it was in 1972 that the Democrats finally had their dark crisis. Hard to have another Democrat like Franklin roosevelt.

The Smoot Hawley Act was the dumbest piece of legislation passed by Congress in an era of severe economic downturn. Contemporary economists and historians complelety agree the tariffs imposed by the act further worsened the Great Depression.

My grandpa said he voted against Roosevelt all four times. He was still upset at the Democrats for World War I, he was the son of German immigrants and his older brother died in the War. He ended up losing his house and having to move back in with his parents but he refused to vote for a Democrat ever again. My other grandfather only had one chance to vote for Roosevelt in 1944 and he didn’t because he thought nobody should be president for four terms.
