Mercer University's Center for Collaborative Journalism awarded Matt Thompson with its inaugural Media Changemaker Prize and Scholarship Competition on January 31, 2015.
The award recognizes a journalist, technologist or entrepreneur who has developed innovative approaches or products in media, pushing the industry forward and making a difference in our civic lives.
Matt Thompson is deputy editor at TheAtlantic.com and vice-chairman of the board of the Center for Public Integrity. Previously, he served as director of vertical initiatives at NPR. At NPR, he started the Code Switch blog and developed “topic-focused verticals covering race, ethnicity and culture; education; and global health and development.” Matt also co-founded Spark Camp, which convenes diverse groups of leaders from a variety of industries. He was a Reynolds Fellow, a Poynter Naughton Fellow for Online Reporting and Writing, a Poynter advisory board member, an interim online community manager at Knight Foundation and deputy web editor at the Minneapolis Star Tribune. He won a Digital Edge Award from the Newspaper Association of America’s New Media Federation.
