ASCAP vs. BMI for Independent Artists: Distrokid Is Not Enough!

Great content definitely will subcribe. Quick question, I am a song writer/ beat maker but I've been registered for years as an artist on BMI but a publisher on Ascap. When I put out my music, should I just stick to BMI or do I need to cancel 1 of these? What's your advice?

I tried.. BMI is now charging $75 😢

asides submitting with tunecore publishing, what else do I need to sumbit my songs to? in your opinion? I was thinking BMI and soundcloud monitization + tunecore publishing would take care of everything? may I know your opinion?

I wrote song with another writer he has different affiliation I'm BMI writer and publisher. What percentage do I put down for my registration with BMI?

I decided to sign up to BMI as a songwriter, and after getting through several pages of the application form, was prompted to pay "a one-time fee of $75.00 to join BMI as a songwriter or composer." This fee is mentioned in their FAQs. So, not really free to join. Is this something new, that has been started since this video was made? I have read some things about BMI not being a non-profit anymore. Anyone have any updated info on this?

Hi Ryan, thanks for the info! I started registration for BMI and came across this passage in the writer's agreement:

"4. Except as otherwise provided herein, you hereby grant to us for the Period:
(a) All the rights that you own or acquire publicly to perform, and to license others to perform, anywhere in the
world, in any and all places and in any and all media, now known or which hereafter may be developed, any part or all of
the Works."

Does this mean that they own the rights to the work, and how would that be possible if they don't copyright work in the first place? I would appreciate anyone who could shed some light on this. Thanks!

The best thing to do is to do your own thing...fuck what they talking about...I was with BMI I don't like the way they do business so I went to ascap...in my opinion ascap is the better team because they have the best rapper which is Eminem...you can be the greatest rapper in the world and get foreshadowed because of what someone feels like what is needed vs what you want 🤟🤟🤟
