If you haven't read the book by Mark Bowen you really should. This was a key moment for the USA, bin Laden was arming and helping the Somali people and when the US withdrew it sent a message to bin Laden that the US did not have the will to engage in long and arduous fighting. General Powell was dead set against the US withdrawing and believed we needed to show the Somali people and the world that we were ready to go the distance to get the job done. But as has happened so many times in military action, one side of the politicians saw this battle as a way to score points against the President at the time. And rather than support the mission, they chose to attack the mission totally blind to the message that it was sending to anyone watching.

This is super realistic, I could not imagine constantly fighting that long. The longest firefight I was in was about 45 minutes or multiple 5 minute firefights throughout the day. When my family ask me what I did in the military, I tell them watch Black Hawk Down. It hard to explain what we went through in Iraq. 11B LEADS THE WAY. Rest in Peace my brothers.

I was born and raised in Mogadishu bcs of this battle most building in Mogadishu were destroyed, Americans were fighting against aided as if it is a desert which no one lives, many innocent pple died on this battle, America should have stayed outf this, they made our situation worse, if they really want to help us, they could negotiated with general aid peacefully 😢 they destroyed the beauty of the city and livet

I found myself watching this video for a second time 11 months later. What I love the most of this kind of movies is that all those actors are stars willing to act in supporting roles.

On October 3, 1993, a special operations unit from the US Ranger and Delta Forces headed into central Mogadishu, Somalia, to capture three rebel leaders. The mission was thought to be relatively simple, but when two American Black Hawk helicopters were shot down, the mission took a disastrous turn for the worse. By the time the sun set over Somalia the next day, a total of 18 Americans had been killed and 73 wounded.

American helicopter pilot Michael Durant was captured, and hundreds of Somali civilians died in what became known as the Battle of Mogadishu!

so with this incident did it seem like there was a very slow response to helping the survivors of the crashed black hawk? i understand how long it would take to form a convey to send them deep into enemy territory to gather survivors but surely there was a lot more air support available already on standby besides a couple of little birds ?

I worked with a couple of guys who were in Somalia when this happened. One was an SF guy who on Garrison's staff, who said, "I never fired a shot, I was in the CP the whole battle working the radios." The other was a guy who was in the 10th Mountain, who said when they got the call to go in, he was sure they were all going to die." Danny McKnight came to give a talk to our office one day, and him and the SF guy swapped stories for fifteen minutes.
