My favorite apocalypse book is Lucifer's Hammer. It's about an asteroid impact and life afterwards. It's very disturbing because it is so accurate.

Another good one (if you can look past the heavy handed libertarianist/pseudo-Objectivist messaging) is “The Girl Who Owned a City,” which takes place after a plague kills everyone above the age of 13.

Thank you for mentioning “A Canticle for Leibowitz.” I read it at 14 and as a teen whose education was steeped in Catholic history it blew my mind.

Some that you might want to check out: One Second After by James Forstchen, about the aftermath of an EMP; Alas, Babylon by Pat frank, about life after nuclear war; and Luciver's Hammer by Larry Niven and Jerry Pournelle, about life after the Earth is struck by a large comet.

Another post-apocalyptic series that crosses over with fantasy - The Dying Earth series by Jack Vance. TBH it's more fantasy than post-apocalypse, where high technology is described as magic, but it's definitely both.

I can't get over how much I like Phillip K. Dick's "Dr. Bloodmoney." Maybe I just read it at an early age. It's odd, like a lot of his stuff, but it gets better each time I read it. Once again, maybe because I read it at a young age.

A very good list. Many thanks for the video. If you could expand your list to the top 13 post-apocalyptic novels, I would suggest adding:

Alas, Babylon (Pat Frank)
One Second After (W.R. Forstchen)
Farnham's Freehold (R. Heinlein)

FYI, the movie "On the Beach" (original version) has always made me lose sleep. The remake is also well done, but the original, filmed in black and white, sets a darker tone, especially in the last few scenes.

My new favorite would be The Passage, Justin Cronin. And the rest of the trilogy. Blindness was pretty messed up. I think World War Z is the best zombie book. The movie shouldn't even share the same name.

I loved reading “Life as we knew it” & “the dead & the gone” & “the world we live in” by Susan Beth Pfeffer are post apocalyptic novels. In these novels a huge meteor hits the earth thus pushing the moon into a much closer orbit & causing a catastrophic change in the weather leading to mass starvation & chaos.

There's a 1972 French post apocalyptic book called "Malevil" by acclaimed popular author Robert Merle. I know it was translated into English. I find it brilliant. If you can get a copy I highly recommend it. To give you a taste it starts with some French guys going into a wine cellar in some country castle called Malevil, an old English castle left over from the Hundred Years' war, in the South West, and suddenly a big noise, everything starts heating up, wine bottles are popping, the guys are getting crazy dehydrated in a matter of seconds, and are drinking up the boiling wine bottles popping etc... They just survived a nuclear holocaust. The rest of the book is these survivors recreating a society, and having to fight with neighborhing survivors and shit. Just a cool book by a great author who's better known for historic novels in post war France.

Good list of great reads, sir. It always takes me by surprise that no one's dystopia/post-apocalypse list ever includes: Engine Summer, by John Crowley and Davy, by Edgar Pangborn. Both books are bloody brilliant; unlike anything on your list, just as they are from each other. If I added both to your excellent list (making 12) and then told to pare that down to a top 5, both of them would make my list; they really are that good. Just saying.
