I think we inherently devalue photos captured with a phone for some reason. My hypothesis is that its too easy and ubiquitous for it to matter. We also are familiar with the aesthetic of photos captured with a phone so we can recognize it easily. People generally don't consider moments captured with a phone to be expressive. It's also more technically limiting, intentionally, so that the barrier of entry is lower which means there is also less variables you can tweak to refine a photo. There's also the ML involved in post when the photo is captured in order to enhance the scene that kind of doesn't feel honest or believable.

All these things are what's happening behind saying phone photos "doesn't have a soul". They might be better on a technical level, but they won't make you feel a connection.

thanks for the comparison

I am doing the same experiment vs the iPhone 14 which is clearly no match for my AE-1 program. The pictures coming out from the 35mm are just magical.

Iphone automaticly makes hdri. Dynamic range is different. Hence SLR is king, specially if there is BW film)

I recently had a funeral and when going through the photos I noticed all the old ones shot on film were just more memorable while the digital ones felt stale. This was prior to acknowledging the difference between digital and film. I do think it’s a bit of bias and nostalgia. Regardless I’m looking to buy an SLR

It is like comparing apples with pineapples ... in addition - phones will never have a "photography soul" ....

film has as much to do with exposure than it does with the scanning. you dont even mention that and thats the really important bit....

iPhone produces a much sharper image, but its just dead. The film is grainy but smooth and alive.

Film all the way.

The iPhone takes "more accurate" photos, but the Canon takes "better feeling" photos. 35mm is just dripping with character and feeling when compared side by side.

I like the cleanness of the iPhone camera when it comes to pointing a camera directly at a light source, like the sun, but when the light source is actually illuminating objects in a scene and the camera is pointed away from said light source, the images feel amazing and flawless in their own right. Overall, I definitely prefer the Canon. Beautiful images.

That Canon AE-1 is one beautiful camera! I own one. Kodak Portra 400 will give you a warmer tone as it is heavier with yellows. I use a graduated ND filter to help to keep my skies from getting blown-out. Nice video comparisons!

really enjoyed this comparison! I think next time it would help viewers to know which settings you shot at on the canon since iphones tend to auto set at higher f stops to give that sharper looks (and let's not even talk about auto hdr lol) but it looks like you shot wide open almost always on the canon which gave some blown out highlights in a few snaps

You can easily edit digital photos to look like film photos. Also, some of the film photos completely blow out the sky and overexpose the white spots. I do appreciate the "softness" that film produces.

Would help if you didn’t blow out all the canon photos but they still look better

some of those canon shots - bit out of focus. im suspecting you used the program mode and it stopped down the aperture ; in manual mode you could have forced f8-f16 to get more depth of field and compensate by changing shutter speed down a bit - then they would have looked more like the iPhone shots in terms of focus and depth of field. another thing with some films - love one extra stop of light- others a stop less depending on conditions. on the sunny pics I'd have said they were a tiny bit over exposed. but on the foot shot - bang on as contrast on canon was better and colour saturation more interesting. if you shoot Ektar or E100 - the colour and grain is so good on colour shots.

In my opinion the iPhone and Canon are both very good cameras in general. The iPhone of course is more easier to produce and store while taking some very beautiful shots. While the Canon really has a glow and nostalgic feeling to it I think its better at capturing the emotion more than the iPhone can but of course the film has to be produced etc so its less convenient.

In some photos I prefer the iPhone, in other the old Canon. Colours are much more realistic in the iPhone, but sometimes the old Canon seems to have better dept, shadows are sharper and more three-dimensional in some photos. This is just my impression. Great job anyway 💪

Phones are still limited by their minuscule optics, until theh fix that to give us a decent dof they have no chance against a camera, even a cheap ass digital camera from 10 years ago gets better photos, the exception being low light situations

Your AE1 is consistently over exposing by one to two stops outdoors. 400 is too fast which is blowing out your blue skies. If you want a better comparison use 100-200 ASA and enlarge.

If you are looking for a crisp, in focus, perfectly exposed picture with lots of detail and balanced colours, the high end smartphones and digital cameras do a great job. If you want to capture a moment and turn it into a photograph, 35mm film still wins.

How long would it take on an edit programme to bring the iPhone images to match the Canon? How impossible is it to make the Canon images look like the iPhone? Hold on Every image I see has been digitally molested, asks us to suspend belief and presents ultra vivid tomfoolery as truth. Yup, I guess it doesn’t matter, either way it’s all shades of fakery.
