I don’t understand how anyone can be so selfish to continue drugs when they are pregnant, addict or not the life of another person should be enough to quit. Pure evil.

Sadly this happens in real life. You shouldn’t give a woman her newborn baby unless you intend to have her keep it. Because taking the child once she is bonded is torture.

"She had 9 months to do right by the baby and didnt"

She could have done WORSE! She could have ended its life by overdosing herself. She could have done MORE drugs in turn giving it even more addictions, heck she could have given birth and hid the body or disposed of the baby, therd are so so many worse things she could have done. She wound up going to the hospital and having the nurses and doctors take care of said baby. At least she gave the baby a CHANCE. People sesm to not realize just how bad opioid withdrawals can be. It is not like some others where you simply "come down" and be okay. You get violently ILL, you feel like you've had the worst flu to exist and all it takes is one tiny ahot or tiny littke sniff or pill to make it all go away and feel better. Next time you think about outting down someone for their addictions try to have a bit of compassion instead. Try to remember that we ALL have addictions and that we all have faults and flaws. Pick people up instead of throwing them down.

What kind of long term affects can withdrawal at birth cause?
I've been through withdrawal as an adult (not heroine tho) and it was awful. I can't imagine feeling that before you even have real consciousness

We shouldnt be shaming addicts. Addiction is a mental illness, just like depression or anxiety. They never chose to be addicts, just like some of us never chose to have anxiety or depression. They should be treated with dignity rather than being shamed like this mother was. It’s not her fault she’s an addict who got pregnant. Without treatment addictions are hard to control on your own. I feel for all the addicts out there who are struggling and send love and good vibes to those who are getting help, still healing, and those who have been sober for a while❤

There should be a program where people don't lose custody of their Children. Children should be in care for just the timeframe of the parents being in rehab. Just a thought... I know, some children are given up for legitimate reasons. My school friend was adopted, because, his Birth Mother couldn't afford to feed him & his Siblings- living in poverty after, his Birth Father left them.

Methadone treatment of mom strictly titrated for breastfeeding can be ideal re prevents physical withdrawl symptoms in both mom and baby. However unlike a non breastfeeding methadone patiebt the mom doing it as shared treatment thru breastfeeding can never pick up. Normally an occassional hot urine doesnt risk your methadone (though it does restrict you from any take home doses and max your hrs of both group and individual counseling sessions per wk). But if you are breastfeeding the rx is titrated to what is best for the baby. That may not be a high enough dose to "hold" the mom, but whether it is or not, taking other drugs means she is putting baby in danger. If she picks up then breastfeeds him she is giving him heroin, but if she gives him formula that day instead, she is witholding his access to methadone medication.
Situations like this really call for long term 90 day minimum (but possibly up to 6-12 mos) secure, residential maternal/neonatal rehab unit ...where supervised new mothers and their infants can get Medication Assisted Treatment in a secure setting where there s a chance to to get a few months clean without street access and do all the normal rehab stuff like group and individual and art therapy and 12 step, and church/spiritual meditation, and rec, etc but also entails learning how to parent and about child development, nutrition, etc.

The people that put addicts down, it’s what stops so many of us from getting any kind of help. As well as lack of resources, insurance and financial assistance to get help. rehab and detox especially are in no way cheap or even really affordable and I’ve even had to do state funded facility’s which aren’t pleasant trust me but it’s better then nothing and better then the street. Most addicts are also walking around with all kinds of untreated mental health disorders. A lot don’t have anyone, family or friends they can rely on for even emotional support or they’ve burned those bridges and no longer have support. I don’t have any children and never wanted them. I was so afraid of passing down the mental health and substance abuse gene to my baby. I say that because I’m adopted. I was adopted into a loving family but STILL became an addict. Years later was when I found out my bio mother was alcoholic with bi polar disorder. It was found out only because my parents did some digging into my history and took me to different specialists after I was exhibiting behavioral problems and substance use and always getting into trouble in school. they also came to find out I had a mild case of FASD (fetal alcohol spectrum syndrome). I had gone to doctors and had a battery of tests, which included MRI’s of the brain.

Wow all addicts are supposed to be sterilised. Why to bring kids to this world when they can’t be good parents and condenan kids to be adopted for people who will never love them? An addict can’t be a parent, they are mentally sick.

I don't think it is right or fair for the mother holding her newborn and DCFS (department of child & family services) coming in and ripping her baby from her hands. Yes she is unfit for a mom, but letting her hold her baby and taking the baby away is just plain cruel. They have baby cuddling volunteers for a reason so the drug addicted biological mothers will get attached because imagine holding your newborn and DCFS takes your baby away, and it's not right. That's cruel, drug-addicted mothers deserve compassion, dignity, and empathy while going through drug addiction. We may not understand drug addiction, but it's still a disease. Yes, they might have started taking drugs for recreational purposes or boredom, but once hooked on drugs it does become a disease because it's hard to get off drugs just like alcohol as well. Personally I don't understand drug addiction because I never went through drug addiction, but everyone deserves proper treatment and dignity. That's why I don't think it's right for drug addicted bio mother holding her baby and then ends up being taken away anyways, that's pretty cruel in my opinion. Also it is not fair for the newborn baby either because they know their mother scent, that's why once they give birth do not let biological mother engage with their newborn and put the newborn in the foster/adoption system for them to find a loving adoptive family to take them in. This will help for both baby and bio mother, so they don't have to deal with the grief. Babies can still feel grief even if they're not verbal yet, babies know when they are being taken away from their mother right after they were being held by their mother. Trust me as a child development person, I know this first hand because I have volunteer in the neonatal ICU unit and saw heroin and opioid addicted babies. It's just not fair for the baby or the biological mother, that's why I baby cuddling volunteers exist for a reason so the biological mother doesn't have to be attached and the grief of losing her baby after birth, because she will not meet her baby because her newborn is already in the system aka losing custody of her baby.
