I bought Apacer AST280 240GB 4 years ago and it is still doing great at 97% health, just past 15 TBW.
ОтветитьMy SSD reads that it is at 72%
It is only 5 years old.
It reads that there is 261.73 GB available.
Should I be alarmed?
I'm watching this as my Samsung SATA 870 EVO died after 1 outage.
Ответитьmy 120 gb ssd that i bought around the time this video released is still going strong.
ОтветитьIs there an update after 6 years?
ОтветитьThank you for great explanation.
ОтветитьExcellent as usual, thankyou.
ОтветитьI just subbed on a 6 year old video.
ОтветитьI never thought they would wear down/out. Wrong! 🎃
ОтветитьThat's very informative, I would like to know if computer memory has a similar problem with life expectancy?
Ответитьvery simple if you have important data it always needs to be backed 2 or 3 times and since backed data is not accessed constantly just get Big HDD for backup and in you PC use SSD for speed at this point SSD are Only worth it for Main Windows drive and gaming drives for end users anything else just use HDD
ОтветитьGreat video Thank you
ОтветитьMy Sandisk 128GB SSD from way back then....Nand written 66738GB, 1382 hours uptime. Not ONE error. Health is 100%. Made in 2015. In a better condition as my HDD's from the same time.
Ответитьit will last until i escape
ОтветитьNot 6 years though....
ОтветитьCould you do a new video on this?
ОтветитьHard to believe that this man still checks the comments in a 6 years video 😊
Ответитьas stated, straight forward, no annoying music or over active shouting and gestures. Just good, sound, how to do it videos. Exactly what I googled for. Many thanks.
ОтветитьI have a Samsung SSD 512GB SATA that I installed about 6 years ago. It has only the OS on it, never install programs or use it for storage. Never had any problems with it, and hoping it lasts a while longer as I build my new systems.
Fair winds and following seas to all.
Sir ,make a new video about new ssd and their life expectancy and performance.which one is best on price to performance ratio
ОтветитьWhat happens when an SSD runs out of write cycles?
ОтветитьVery interesting but a lot of info to digest. I am 67 so maybe that's it. What I did was took you advice a bought the Elements 5T external for my new laptop. I install most of my programs to that drive and use it basically as my main harddrive. So If I am just brousing the net I do not need to plug it in. I use a 256gb SD card for the slot It work as a HD when the 5T is not pluged in. I also use a Old USB thumb drive just for portabilty with smaill files like the book I am writing. I do have a 1T external I built and a Sony external DVD writer. So far so good everthings working good and I figure my SSD is getting less ware and tear. I will say my Lattop is not set up as a game machine. Last year I had 2 heat operation so it ist pretty much business.
ОтветитьThank you!
ОтветитьGood point about keeping free space. Actually I don't trust SSD much. First: never buy cheaper SSD. I have buyed Patriot Burst, using it as system disc. One day after 2 years it stopped working, being totally dead. Currently I am thinking about buying few Samsung 870 EVO SSDs for my PCs as a system discs. Second: Make backups regurarly on classic HDD. SSD have one big disadvantage. Usually they stop working in a second without any sign of aging or warning. Classic HDD ususally die slowly, so you have time to make a backup. And when they stop working instantly it's mostly stuck head which can be easily repaired by yourself.
ОтветитьData safety != life expectancy. FW of SSD will report it's state and will prevent overwriting worn out cells. That means that wore out fail scenario is more like read only mode than data loss, unless poor thing is neglected and errors are ignored. For data safety, three other params are more importanta:
1.) MTBF - mean time between failures
2.) (Offline) data retention period
3.) Online data retention period
First one is self-explanatory - how often that model fails on average.
Second one is important for archive and drive not in use. Worst case scenario is 2.5" drive mounted behind motherboard, next to CPU, but disconnected - storage heat reduce data retention.
Third one shouldn't be issue - if drive is powered, it can monitor cells and relocate data if needed. But, my first SSD, Samsung 840 EVO had FW bug causing data degradation. Luckily, first symptoms were reduced speed because it's slow process and FW still can recover data, with drop of performance.
I don't trust all these so called branded product anymore.
Last time using branded hdd like samsung and seagate also spoilt.
Now using non branded ssd Netac 256 GB for my OS and Lexar 1 TB for my games and etc.

ОтветитьIs it good to partition SSD like HDD? I have only one M.2 slot in my laptop and was planning to put larger capacity SSD if it can be partitioned...
Ответитьis there also a software for mmc to check its TBW?
ОтветитьSuperb
ОтветитьOne hears a lot about 'influencers'. I realized today that no one influences my purchases more than you do. I just wish I'd seen this video yesterday, before I ordered a SanDisk Extreme Portable SSD. I would have instead ordered the SanDisk Portable SSD. I didn't really need the extra write speed, and would gladly have settled for longer drive life.
ОтветитьExtremely informative, practically useful and that hair! Chef's kiss of perfection over here folks - dont sleep on Explaining Computers EC!
ОтветитьAlthough life expectancy of an SSD is improving I would still like to get low capacities for vintage computers. I had installed Windows 98 to one. I have MS-DOS 6.22 and FreeDOS on another SSD.
ОтветитьOne i can say for Sure an SSD in carfully usage has longer Live than a mecanical Drive 👍
ОтветитьGreat explanations here. A great video. Is it possible to get a 'RAID' style drive where the SSD drive is paired with a standard magnetic drive ?
ОтветитьPerhaps a RAID array would be recommended for SSDs. I currently have 2 SSDs, one in my notebook computer, where it replaced a smaller capacity spinning drive, and one in a mini PC that I run pfSense on, which came with a SSD.
ОтветитьI wish I knew about wear levelling earlier. I’ve had my 512gb Macbook ssd at 99% for for a whole year 😬
ОтветитьOver a decade?!😮... I didn't know my ssd could last that long... 😀. I'm planning to use mine as a dedicated boot os... No write, just read operations to lessen degredation...😀.. Is that a good idea..? 💡🤔
ОтветитьOMG Samsung 830 Series, my first SSD back in 2012, ah the nostalgia 🥹🤓
Still have it and working after 11 years (purchased on January)!
And almost 25 TB data written 😄
For all people worrying about SSD writes, relax, you’ll die much sooner than your SSD lol in fact I SSDed everything from my main desktop PC to my PS4 😂 🔝 I’m a huge fan of SSDs
Do some forms of raid preserve the drives?
ОтветитьSo excited when petabytes come through and drop prices more! Great advice for provisioning. Im def keeping an hdd for my backup drive.
ОтветитьPlaying this video at 1.50x speed and still feels slower than linus tech tips videos.
Ответитьwhich lasts longer ? an SSD or an NVME SSD ?
ОтветитьAs of today, which has practical longer life: SSD or USB flash drive?
ОтветитьI'm considering getting rid of my 2 4TB hdds and replace them with m.2 ssds. Do you think this is worthwhile? I've got a new build
ОтветитьAll anyone seems to care about is Dram vs Dramless. They believe that an entry level SSD like Kingston A400 which is QLC (could have some SLC) and Dramless are not suitable as a boot drive. However, I would assume that these are the type drives that a new computer would come with.
ОтветитьI got my Samsung SSD 3 years ago and used it thoroughly. Multiple data writes, formats, reformats, etc... and now after 3 years the total TBW still is <25TB, and it has a rated TBW of 150TB so it will last another 15 years at this rate. Good choice to spend a bit more on the SSD back then.

Ah now, you said the words right there! - "we worry greatly about he life expectancy" Why is that? Why didn't we worry so much about the life expectancy of hard drives? ..........i've got a couple of 80gig hard drives that were manufactured in 2007, still going strong. I've got some much newer bigger hd's, 500gig & 1tb, that have given up the ghost. I find it curious? In this aged of computers advancing so quickly, we worry about the "life expectancy" of something that will probably serve us all well for a long time? . People go out and spend £1,000 on an iPhone, knowing that it's going to be out of date in 4 weeks! .......so what's the problem!?!? :)
ОтветитьFaster, yes. I don't know that I'd call SSD's robust. SSD's need to be powered on every six months or so. No such limit for HDD's.
ОтветитьI've read that an ssd should be refreshed in order to maintain data, but I was never sure if it was enough to simply turn the drive on, read every file, or re-write every crucial file. I was thinking for more important smaller data archival, bluray m-disc might be worthwhile, but then I also wonder for how many years we will be able to still get hold of a bluray drive that can read them. I'd need to archive the drive, by buying two. I wish there was a faster and larger capacity physical format, disc or no disc.
