My 850w just exploded a capacitor the other night. Wasn’t doing anything demanding basically just on the desktop without any games running, never left it run for extended periods. Sounded like a gun went off in my house, who knows if everything else survived.

This will also be a big deal for making computers that run off of DC. Imagine this:

You plug your PC into the 12v outlets from your Tesla's battery, and then you play VR racing games from the driver's seat with the actual steering wheel and pedals from the car!

I have a mother board like that but it’s a Acer predator and it’s a pain wanting to upgrade the power supply because I can’t find any online that’s more that my current one

First , thank you for posting this. very informative. this video was made 2 years ago. As of now i still can not find an ATX12VO power supply. My Acer prebuilt gaming rig came with this new standard of ATX12VO. I am upping the videocard to an RTX 4080 or 4090, (needs a min 850W PSU)and CAN NOT find a PSU that goes higher than the 500W unit the gaming rig came from the factory. if anyone has link to a 650W or higher power supply , please chime in. thanks PS: my only other option is to convert back to a regular 12V ATX motherboard.

More failure points to the Motherboard which is more expensive and more heat....

I get it. If a power rail fails you replace that expensive Mobo

so that's why most office prebuilts have way lower idle power consumption even with way older hardware than the ones I built by myself, they're literally built different

Great! More proprietary parts for pre-built that I can't use with other stuffs so once something die the whole thing go in landfill.

I fail to see any advantage in this topology, maybe it's just trying to save some copper. I would prefer to have all power transformation in a separate, replaceable unit, away from motherboard, CPU and graphics card. Better consumer education and better marketing should stop ppl from buying oversized power supplies.

I have a 2013 worstation and that runs 12V only. So the tech is not that new, just on the consumer market.

"About a wash for the consumer"
Corporate greed: Allow me to introduce myself

When companies save a penny on a already established price you're a fool if you think they're passing that penny onto you. PSUs are going to stay the same price and motherboards will get more expensive.

3.3V conductors on SATA aren't there for many years now and they were never there on Molex to begin with.

I don't care about power consumption, pc must work fast and efficient.

some of hp's desktop motherboards does that: the power supply only has two 4pins, one for the cpu one for the motherboard and from the motherboard, there's a six pin header that gives out the power for the sata devices

Early naughts, NOT "knots".
Your QA missed that?
