I'm on venlafaxine, an SNRI, & my only regret is that I wasn't told beforehand that I'd develop a dependency on it. If I miss a dose, I get horrendous withdrawal symptoms - brain zaps, 'flu-like symptoms, violent mood swings, suicidal ideation, nausea, etc.

Additionally, my ability to experience emotion has been muted by about 99%. Any feelings I have feel like they're being transmitted through 6 inches of concrete & steel. While this does mean that I struggle to relate or connect emotionally to others, as an introverted misanthrope I've found this to be a net positive tbh. It also means that my default mood is a quiet neutrality akin to contentedness - I have everything I need in life to be happy: a loving partner & family, stable income, regular meals, a warm place to live, meaningful leisure pursuits... I'm incredibly fortunate, & it's great to have the mental clarity to be able to appreciate that.

I wouldn't be alive today without the aid of antidepressants, so I'm grateful that they exist.

I was on an SSRI for about a month or so, and the first couple of weeks was great. But then I had the severe dip in mood, PSSD (which ironically made me more depressed), suicidal ideations (to the point where I called the hotline), I was suggestible and zombie-like, and my best friend urged me to get a different medication, so my GP gave me a new one and I haven't been back on the SSRI since

I dont understand why ssri then arent used for bpd for example or adhd.. A symptom of bpd is intense moodswings and extreme moods... This might as well be the reason why I am still on ssri despite trying to stop taking it... (I do have bpd, adhd and depression) I do not feel like a robot on ssri but rather I feel more content and in control I still get high highs and low lows however but I dont even want to imagien how bad it would be again without the med...

Prozac is the only ssri I’ve found that works well for me without intolerable side effects.
It helps my anxiety, it doesn’t do much for my depression however.
My anxiety isn’t gone, still struggle a lot with anxiety and the occasional panic attacks. But it has definitely given me less anxiety to the point I’m more functional. Before Prozac I had some pretty intense panic attacks and melt downs. Couldn’t talk very well. I hope medication continues to improve and help others live their lives. Brains are sometimes wonky and wired wrong and medication is often the only way to fix it alongside therapy for many.

SSRIs can truly help! I know from both personal experience, and speaking to patients in my own practice as a medical professional. I often think about them as a ‘leg up’ to assist people in getting back to somewhat baseline functioning. That then allows them to address the psychological roots of their depression with a course of psychotherapy. That’s how these medicines should be used 😊

Something about SSRIs dark side - I’m only 28 and lost all my teeth. SSRIs lead to decreased saliva production, and saliva is paramount for fighting off bacteria. Combine that side effect with the right genes and you can kiss your teeth goodbye no matter how much you brush them.

My whole life I have suffered from major depression, OCD and anxiety. At 15 I started taking SSRI's following extreme desperation, and proceeded to experience the ability to resist all emotion, effectively numbing it. It was only later that I connected it to SSRI's.

I was on both Sertraline and Mirtazapine. The side effects are a bit of a nightmare. The brain zaps. Sertraline stopped me sleeping. Mirtazapine made me lethargic and forgetful. But as you say, they served to numb me. My car could have been on fire with me in it and I'd have been nonplussed, but that was still better than being where I was before emotionally. The really adjacent illness that our medication can do little for is bipolar disorder, especially where the person stops taking the meds because (understandably) they choose to take the highs and the lows, rather than just the numb nothingness. Also bipolar medication often ends up being lithium, and that just gives you heavy-metal poisoning so...

From my expirence (someone with depression) i took Sertaline and well, while in the end it started wearing off and possibly even had a reverse effect of what it used to have, in the beggining it was a magic pill, it gave me everything that i desired, but well instead of my brain adapting to maintain that state without the drug, it adapted to basically resist the drug, but still even after i stopped taking it, it wasn't quite as bad as it used to be before i had depression, so it was still okay. Now i'm taking another one, and i pray that this will treat it permanently. Btw in the last few months before i stopped taking sertaline (and after) i felt pretty numb, but more like a numb depression. And when the sertaline was actually doing its thing, yeah i also had increased agression, it's basically how i imagine roid rage would feel like, and yeah honestly, i didin't really mind it tbh. Now on that second pill, i feel pretty normal, not really that numb, but still, not quite what i would consider optimal.

Ssri gave me my life back after trying everything else, my life would be less ruined if I had just gotten on them instead of painstakingly trying every holistic method and spiraling out of control I’d still be very gainfully employed and married. Depression ruined my life and ssri fixed it where nothing else did. I’m very angry that I was talked out of it. I’d still have my life!

There are at least two types of depressed people...one is depressed for reasons that they shouldn't be...one is depressed for reasons they should be...thusly the treatment should reflect the cause...one might need an ssri to help with being depressed for the wrong reasons...the others might need help the the reasons they are depressed... basically someone thats depressed for something unimportant, but shouldn't be, might benefit from them, someone depressed because they are homeless, get beaten, live in bad circumstances every day are depressed because of their environment...and wont benefit from them...i feel like doctors only have the one tool to prescribe, make their day easy, and not be depressed themselves, and if you only have a hammer everything looks like a nail...its a very complicated subject...with problems on every level...from not receiving treatment soon enough, misdiagnosis, giving the wrong treatments, side effects, doctors are probably paid for selling these drugs etc. Its pretty messed up.

While I appreciate the edgy take on science this channel has, this is a very dismal view of SSRI's. My life was a disaster from 0-25 years of age, and then better but still pretty fucked for a few years after that. Now at 31 I started SSRI's about three months ago and I finally feel hope for the first time. I feel like life is worth living and I genuinely crave working hard to build a better future. I actually can not believe how much better I feel. Maybe some people have bad experiences with SSRI's, but so far they have been a god-send for me.

As it is very insightful and contains many constructive facts, you should consider that many people that either were on ssri or still are might be triggered by the background music. I've been on Elavil since 2011, i had insomnia and sadness and Dr.'s kept telling me i was depressed and I kept telling them i need to sleep that's why I appear depressed, tryed several anti depression meds and wasn't having any good results, so I researched a bunch of different studies and i told my Dr. I wanted to give this a try as my last resort, and within 2 days i was sleeping on a normal schedule and i always take it at the same time every night, but i do on occasions have were it might take me longer to fall asleep and usually its when i have to be up super early and my brain goes into i cant sleep mode but by the following night im back on schedule. There has been a couple time that I didn't pick up my med from pharmacy before they closed and i get some messed up dreams really weird ones

This hit the nail on the head. I’ve been taking the generic version of Zoloft for almost 5 years now. It’s true, it works but it doesn’t work. I used to have severe bouts of anxiety and depression, intense emotional roller coasters, mood swings, anger issues, panic attacks, etc… this medication really did smooth everything out. But much of the time I do feel like a numb and apathetic zombie. Often times I just feel unmotivated and don’t really care. Lethargic and can’t get out of my own way. Stuff that used to interest me or excite me, I barely even care about anymore if at all. My personal life seems to be taking a turn for the worst, and I barely even care. I wonder if this is the “emotional blunting” I’ve heard about that comes with long term SSRI use. Sure, feeling numb is a lot better than the anxiety roller coaster I used to be on, but I hate not “feeling.” It really sucks. I want to be able to “feel” and care about stuff again. I’ve been wondering lately if these meds are even right for me anymore.

Disclaimer: this is just an account of my personal experience, I am not suggesting that this applies to anyone and everyone, do not take this as advice.

I was given SSRI's when I was 15, and they kept me on them for three years. All of which shouldn't be done. I ended up with serotonin syndrome, and an alcohol use disorder, I completely lost touch with reality. Luckily I had a small shred of sanity, I felt in my bones that somehow this was all down to those tiny innocuous pills I took every morning. I asked the Dr to review my medication, I said I wanted to taper down. Instead, they increased my dose. Clearly I needed to take this into my own hands. I ignored all the advice, I quit cold turkey. Almost immediately I regained my sense of self, my alcohol use disorder resolved, and since I left that terrible place, that terrible 'therapy', I dealt with my demons by myself, and I have been thriving since.
