Ive been on a 60 ft fishing boat on the Columbia river bar during a storm when we lost power trying to cross. Scariest moment of my life. We had solid green water going completely over the wheelhouse and had to be towed in by the coast guard. Its one of the deadliest stretches of water known to man.

Why do these videos have to start out like "A wave is a a thing in the ocean made of water, some people like to surf them." Yeah we know what waves are, show me what the title says

watching those waves is terrifying but also beautiful. I can easily see why ancient people saw the oceans as physical manifestations of Gods

I grew up commercial fishing the Columbia River, my family's Drift Right is the Little Cape Horn Drift. It refers to Cape Horn for very good reason. I used to play out there in my 12' plywood skiff and 5 Hp outboard in a good 5' chop. Some years ago, I got volunteered to bring a 125' retired Coast Guard Cutter up the coast from Mare Island to Coose Bay, the first 48 hours we took about every fifth wave over the bow showing green water, we hit a 40-degree roll at one point and took on a couple thousand gallons of water in the stern. Not a fun trip. About 14 years ago I brought my 30' Pilothouse Cutter down from Puget Sound to the Columbia River and just as I got to the Columbia River Bouy at midnight, a storm blew in and the ebb tide had just started. The Coast Guard at Cape Disappointment advised me to cross the bar, it was so rough that it took over 6 hours, Cape Disappointment had me on radar, infra-red, night vision, and had a motor lifeboat stationed at Bouy 10 to come get us if the worst happened. It took me all day to put the inside of that boat back together even though everything was stowed and lashed down everything that could possibly break loose did. Not a trip I would ever want to repeat, my entire boat was disappearing between the swells, mast and all, and it was big for a 30' sailboat. The Columbia River Bar is a place you never want to get caught by the weather, there is a good reason that they call it the Graveyard of the Pacific.

Rogue waves ARE NOT CAUSED BY HIGH WINDS any more than other waves are caused by the wind. Rogue waves occur when two or more waves traveling at different speeds and/or from different directions CONVERGE to create a wave that is larger than other waves in the area. They often appear suddenly and the converging waves can separate and the rogue wave dissipates just as suddenly. Sometimes they are called freak waves.

Rogue waves are made from multiple large waves converging together making one large wave, wind doesn't make rogue waves, it's involved but not like you think.

I've been on 6 cruises and granted these ships are huge, but back in 1987, we went on a 1 day cruise gambling ship. It was about the size of a Love Boat type of ship, much smaller than modern day cruise ships, and we were caught in very high seas in the Gulf of Mexico. I wanna say the waves were around 30-40ft, and maybe even larger. Ship tossed and turned violently, and most everyone on board got sick. But I've never seen waves anything near that big since I've cruised on modern ships. I wonder if the technology just wasn't as good back then, cause I can't believe they would have left port knowing the seas were that violent. We sailed out of Corpus Christi that day.
