There’s something disturbing and stubbornly defiant, strained about his singing in this song in the way that people are before they get broken down. None of his other songs sound like this. It’s an unexamined childish (not childlike) straining.

If someone sang like this on The Voice I’m not sure they’d turn their chairs for him.

From Dylan's first Columbia album. The arrangement was Dave Van Ronk's take on the old folk tune. Dylan recorded it without telling Van Ronk who was planning to record it himself. Everyone in Greenwich Village knew it was Van Ronk's but Dylan's album was released first, not cool. This arrangement became the standard used from then on including The Animals great version. Theirs was improved by the addition of an organ which really made it outstanding.
Anyone notice that picture on the album cover was inverted? He was actually facing left but it looked better inverted. Check the strings on the guitar and how his coat buttons right over left, opposite of real life.

House of the Rising Sun is an American folk song, thought to be written by Georgia Turner and Bert Martin. This song tells of hard times in New Orleans. The most well known version was recorded by Eric Burdon and The Animals in 1964. Bob Dylan does a fantastic job with this song!!! Absolutely great!!

Sure its raw and unrefined but thats the beauty of it. Bob conveys the blues in such a unique style its heavy blues and folk songs. Its the storyteller, not the story they can make anything beautiful and poetic and plus from a womans perspective...Brilliance.
